FMM CUP 2

- Round 10 -

:red: - 10 Men Tactics - :red:

For this final round we're slightly thinking outside the box since it isn't easy to replicate a situation on the pitch where you suddenly find yourself a man down from the start of a game. It's nearly impossible to force a red card at will for this experiment, so we're going for the next best thing - we take a really really bad player in a position where he influences the formation least - and focus on the remaining 10 players for a 10-man tactic to get a result in a full 90min game. Who said it was going to be easy?

So technically, yes, there's 11 players on the pitch BUT 1 player is gawdawfully terrible, in a terrible position (for him as he can't play there) and assigned a player role that is least beneficial to him and the team. He's utterly useless. So we're basically playing with 10 men. He doesn't exist so to speak, but if you're dying to see what he brings to the team - check spoiler at own discretion:

The Club

Clearly, for this round we can only go with a club that's got experience in having players sent off over the years, experienced in having to play for long periods with 10 men vs 11. So upon researching most red-carded teams since 2000s the team topping the list was Lazio Roma

The Game

And what other game gets Lazio more red cards than any other game? You guessed it, a fight to the death between two equally matched gladiators, the Big Derby Battle of Rome - Lazio Roma v AS Roma. Here's how AS Roma are most likely starting the game:

The Tactics

Listen, I'm by no means an expert on this. As a matter of fact, I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing when I go a man down. Sometimes I ignore it and leave things as they are, sometimes I sub one of the flank players off for the red-carded player, and other times I think of a newly improvised formation on the spot and hope things work out. I don't really have a plan in place until the unfortunate event presents itself tbh, so what I've done here is I've searched the wise web for information on 10 men tactics. How do teams react when red-carded? Best systems with 10 players to get/maintain a result and so on. Long story short - here's the Top 3 Formations in no particular order:

  • 5-3-2 Catenaccio adapted: 5-3-1
  • 4-4-2 Route One adapted: 4-3-2
  • 3-5-2 Fluid Counter Attack adapted: 3-5-1

The Options

So after adapting these supposedly "best formations" into FMM systems we get the following 3 options for you to choose from. It's no surprise these are defensive-minded tactics, after all, we're at a "numerical disadvantage" in the arena.

Option A : 5-3-1 "Catenaccio"

559141998_Screenshot_20230313-0233392.thumb.png.0f94f7abead99365adce1ecd25971126.png

The original 5-3-2 with WBs has been modified to accommodate 10 players, essentially the same set-up but now with a single striker instead of two. The WBs have dropped a line and now fulfill the FB role only. This is done to provide better defensive security, reduce risk, and mainly to either maintain results or avoid losing a match.

Option B : 4-3-2 "Route One"

922219310_Screenshot_20230313-0246112.thumb.png.8cd67b68d8a9c7a7f89d343f79e21c8f.png

The original 4-4-2 has first made way for an obvious 4-4-1 (removing one striker) but was then adapted to a slightly more opportunistic 4-3-2 (removing a midfielder). The emphasis here lies less strongly on defending a result and more strongly on keeping the attacking power to attempt to win games.

Option C : 3-5-1 "Fluid Counter Attack"

409074895_Screenshot_20230313-0244242.thumb.png.1391148f8e6d67dc0379314495ff6010.png

1533102154_Screenshot_20230313-1015132.thumb.png.840da94a440df24464798ca3ce7bbeb8.png

The original 3-5-2 with WBs has lost one man up front and remains with one front man operating as a 3-5-1. Here the WBs don't drop a line but remain in place to better provide the fluidity of possible counter attacks. No changes to the system itself other than that it now relies on the skills and effectiveness of the 1 striker.

Each option shall be played 10x featuring Lazio Roma (us) Vs. AS Roma (them). The option that generates the best results - as in most total points - wins. (-> best GD -> best GF). You may discuss the 3 options at length in this thread but do NOT reveal your answer. *PM me the answer!*

Since this is the final round of this amazing cup and we do NOT want to spoil the climax of the grand finale, votes shall NOT be revealed until I post the final update. If you have any further questions or require additional info before making your decision feel free to ask. Goodluck!

3 wins, 2 draw, 5 losses. That's decent playing with 10 men. There were a few late goals and unfortunate losses for Lazio. A 5-backline often invites the opponent to come at you and we couldn't hold on to the results for too many occasions. With a better LB and CB we'd have 5 quality defenders and maybe done better here I feel.

Option B : 4-3-2 "Route One"

884906597_Screenshot_20230314-1614412.thumb.png.5a597f35185365bc9585a7fd371c70b9.png

3 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses. Only 3 losses with 10 men is some achievement. At times it looked like we were playing with 11 tbh. A flat midfield of 3 proved hard to break down CM - DLP - CM and did their job well over the 10 games to support the 2 forwards. I like this one quite a lot. Probably my go-to tactic when down a man as it's still a threat going forward.

Option C : 3-5-1 "Fluid Counter Attack"

4 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses. Beating Roma 4x with this setup is some feature I have to say. Odd at the same time as the team was lacking pace but clearly the fluid counters proved deadly even with 10 men. Looks like Roma isn't great either in that pace department which is why things clicked best with this system. A deserved winner of the round.

This is the end right here. 14 good lads of Vibe but only 1 can be the champion. Big thanks to all of you for participating and doing your part to make this an enjoyable and entertaining community event. Without people like you there's no chance for events like this so BIG THANKS to you guys.

Then I have to of course congratulate the 3 Bronze Medal Winners 🥉  @AtleticoWolves @BakaSotong @DutchTony you guys proved tough competition! Well done! Congratulations to Silver Medal Winner 🥈  @DanEnglish you were a very tough cookie to beat. Well done to you too. And then I'll take my hat off to 2017's losing finalist of FMM Cup 1 but 2023's FMM Cup 2 Gold Medal Winner 🥇 @AndersJ !!!!! Amazing job, mate. You proved the most consistent of the pack and you may now forget that lost final 6 years ago and proudly use your new title. Also, it may not be another 6 years before we have FMM Cup 3, but much sooner so enjoy your crown and your badge for now 😉

Congratulations to @AndersJ and a massive thanks to @BatiGoal for the thought provoking and pain staking effort this took.

I have learned a lot along the way (and not got relegated, had a transfer embargo and gone bust at the same time...) so thanks to you all too.

Could’ve gotten bronze if I chose C 😧

Maybe we add more rounds next time 😆 or an entirely different setup just to maintain the freshness of such events.

I'm already thinking of a possible next event, Futsal 3, some of you may be familiar with that, I'll see if I can make it juicy enough for people to show interest and sign up. I'll check in the coming days.

Cheers and thanks for the kind words guys!!
