Help How to counter teams that employ a 5-at-the-back?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am managing Dulwich Hamlet, and I am currently in League One.

However, I am having a hard time breaking down teams that play 5 at the back - I either lose 1-0 at home, or get absolutely battered when playing away.

I am currently using these tactics here:

Obviously, the formation is a 3-1-4-2, which is probably why 5-at-the-back teams can easily break my team.

What modifications, tips, or changes would you recommend to help me have a chance against 5-at-the-back teams?

Thanks!

short passing, short GK distribution, work into box, Tempo normal, Attacking mentality, expressive

want players to hold the ball, and move it around intelligently and to move around and be unpredictable as best you can.

Def line to standard too to bring the opponent out a bit

Close down all over to pounce on any mistakes

1. Utilize width: When playing against teams that play 5 at the back, it is important to create width in your attack. This can be done by instructing your wide players to stay wide and make runs in the channels.

2. Overload the midfield: Another tactic that can be employed is to overload the midfield. This can be done by instructing your midfielders to move forward and press high up the pitch to prevent the opposition from having time on the ball.

3. Create overloads in attack: You can create overloads in attack by instructing your forwards and attacking midfielders to make runs behind the opposition defense. This will create space for your players to exploit and create goal scoring chances.

4. Utilize set pieces: Set pieces are a great way to break down teams that play 5 at the back. Utilize your set pieces to create goal scoring chances and put your team in the best position to score.

5. Use direct passing: Another tactic that can be employed is to use direct passing. This can be done by instructing your players to make direct passes to the strikers or wingers. This will create space and give your team a chance to exploit the opposition defense.
