Why is it that when you buy players you have to pay a lot of money but when clubs come to buy players from you they offer small money, no matter who the player is. Is this right?

So it depends (at least) on the players you are buying / selling, and both club’s reputation.

It’s cheaper to buy players:

  • with affordable release clauses,
  • or with <12 months on their contracts,
  • or who are transfer listed,
  • or from lower reputation clubs / leagues.
  • or who aren’t playing regularly.
  • or who are unhappy / want to leave

Its more expensive to buy players:

  • with no affordable release clause
  • and many years on their contract
  • and who the club want to keep
  • and are from higher reputation clubs / league.
  • and who are playing regularly
  • and who are happy / want to stay

Just some relatively normal reasons 🙂 kinda matches real life, but feel free to share any bizarre examples you have

You said it is expensive to buy players who play regularly...why is it that Liverpool wanted to buy Gvardiol for £50m from my team(ManCity) yet he plays almost every game...he is very happy at ManCity...

The main point is when other clubs want to buy your players they usually come with small money. However when you want to buy a player you get charged almost 2 times the value

Ah yes. It’s a negotiation.

Selling - They naturally will try to start lower, and you aim is to negotiate it higher - by asking for more, getting more bids from other clubs, or just saying ‘no’, etc.

Buying - How much did you buy him for? I guess you can get Gvardiol for about double his £35m value at the start of the game? You can also bid £50m, but they’ll likely reject it, as they don’t need to sell him, so if you really want him, you’ll have to overpay.

Negotiation Power - That’s a normal negotiation process. Think of how much Brighton earned this summer (~£200m from 3 players) or Ajax last summer - as they didn’t want to sell, but the buying club really wanted them (do overpaid).

Thoughts? 🙂

Hello everybody, I would like to add that my feeling in 23 edition is that the "end of contract" has become more important.

Ex. You ask for a (good/ very good) player with 3-4 years remaining contract --> no way. You ask for the same, 2 years remaining --> you have a real possibility.

AI seems more reactive/scared to not loose players for free at the end of the contract.

Another question... I tried to sell Aymeric Laporte (ManCity) and I offered him to clubs but did not place him in the transfer market. I got two bids, each £35m...I tried to ask for £40m but neither club submitted their second bid. They both withdrew. Is that a bug that needs to be fixed or?

I don’t know for sure, but feels unlikely to be a bug.

Do you know how much Laporte was worth / valued at in-game at the time?

  • E.g. if he’s worth £39m, I have noticed before that the AI may bid less than the value, and I can negotiate it to just under that £39m value.
  • but if I try to negotiate it to more than the value (e.g. 40m) then they pull out.
  • same thing when offering players out at below vs above their value. More interest is shown when offered £1m below value than £1m above value.
  • But haven’t really tested this, just sone occasional observations

Or did you have a saved game file from when you got the bid - as you can quit / reload multiple times to test different responses.

Have a bit of a different answer to @DanEnglish on the original question

Don't get me wrong, all his factors contribute. However he missed one that's on par or even higher than even transfer listed/contract length, the player's age.

It's absolutely ridiculous, bids come in for top line mid-20 players as those for 17 year olds who barely had a run of games. But to be fair, that's how real life is now as well

Get world class 19 year old? God damn 186m bid flying in, after they already spent 122m on another of my player

There is a bug that evens out the playing field. Don't offer your player for sale. Offer him on loan. You'll get loan offer, switch loan to transfer and change sell on clause to like 30-40%. 80% of time AI counters with ~1.5x-2.0x the market value and maybe -5-10% of sell on clause. Eg selling 16m players for 25-28 with 25-30%, 4m for 7-9m with 20% etc etc. Seems buggy but exactly what you'd expect to pay yourself if you were buying

I shifted like half the Leeds squad like that and replaced with 3-4 wonderkids and rest loaners from Chelsea and city with 0 wage contribution

Yes, the loan thing seems to be the way to go now.

In previous versions, including the first several versions of FMM23, you could normally bargain when you got a transfer offer from a club, but they nerfed it in one of the recent updates. Now it is harder to get offers in the first place (especially if the players have a high wage, which is more common now?) and the other club is less likely to bargain, even for a  very good player.

They seem to bargain a little better if you offer for loan and swtich. Mind you that is now too overpowered as you can shift almost any player, which isn't realistic.
