Disclaimer: This is a work in progress, will probably not be plug and play, more an attempt for me to create something based on my interpretation of a real-life playstyle.

I'll follow up with some more details and screenshots of results etc. but for now, here's the base. I've made a few shrewd transfers across the season, and tweaked the tactics along the way, to a point where I'm fairly happy with the performances as well as the results. There are a few odd occasions of freak losses, but I don't think that's too different to real life di Zerbi.

The formation:

I'd toyed with having the 2 CMs in an offset 3 with the LWB in the CDM line, to shore up the defence, and allow for better playing out from the back, but as you'll see from the results, it nuked any sort of attacking threat I had in the first few games of the season.

The instructions:

One of the hallmarks of de Zerbi's teams is keeping the ball and playing from the back to draw the opposition in and then move forward into the gaps this exposes, It's difficult to really replicate within the mobile game, but I find that Slow build up and Balanced defensive line is as close to playing in this way as I have managed to find.

Normally I'm dead against having 3 final third instructions ticked, but in this case, it seemed appropriate, and actually worked well, so I've had to change my opinion somewhat.

Highlights:
A double over Man City in the league
A final day comeback from 3-0 down against Newcastle

Lowlights:
Rashford is the bogey man
So is Darwin Nunez
Lost our heads completely in Europe. Will be better next year.

The final position:

About as close a PL table as you're ever likely to see, with 3 games to go, I think there were 6 points separating the top 6. 3rd in the first season with a transfer spend of ~£25m is pretty encouraging.

The accolades:

Will be a real shame to see Ansu Fati go. My standout player, and would love to keep him on permanently, but he's already valued at £66m, so I'll need to replace him in the summer with someone within my budget!

Brighton fan here. Well done for giving it a go, it seems to be well known that replicating De Zerbi ball on FM is impossible due to many factors that can't be implemented on the tactic creator or match engine. I've also given it a go and had mixed results. Agreed on the Final Third instructions, they all fit FM based RDZball. I'm intrigued that you had Slow tempo, both because that's not how Brighton play but also not seen a successful tactic use it in FM thus far. But as you say maybe that's how to get RDZball working in match engine?

In terms of replicating Brighton, some of the roles are very different to how they setup, Forward is definitely more of a DLF/Treq/PF or any other role that drops deep. AM is pivotal to the way they transition, I defiantly wouldn't say it was a Treq as they bring the ball out of midfield and are open for shooting opportunities the other end. I'd say its an AM role but had great success here in FM with SS. Also right back has only really played IWB on a few games, De Zerbi seemed adamant to play this way at the opening of the season with Mliner/Gross but it never worked as they couldn't get back into position quick enough, opposition teams already correctly identified this as a weakness so it just highlighted an existing problem. However, I will say that with a more defensive minded CM (which we lost with Bissouma and Calciedo) and a quicker RB, I think RDZ will come back to that role there. Having said all that, what Brighton do and waht works well/better in FM are two differnet things, especially in FMM

Nice to see a tactic that isn't all out attack and conceeding, especially with one of your CBs getting into team of the year.

Appreciate the response! Some of your points give me an idea that I was on the right track with my initial set up, while some give me food for through on pushing it forward to make it more realistic and also more successful!

The forward position has been, and is still a headache for me. Initially, he was a DLF, with Welbeck being the best performing option, however both he and Ferguson were long term injured, so I had to resort to using Joao Pedro, who was previously in the AM position (with AM role). That meant that Fati came inside from the wide positions, and Sarmiento came back from loan (stronger than my first XI wide options I might add, which is something I’m noticing with a lot of loan players!).

IWB is a direct consequence of pushing both central midfielders from DM to CM line, as I was finding myself over exposed in this area. Lamptey isn’t really the best fit for this role, but was deputised by Milner/Groß, and has now been replaced by Montiel, who offers that ability to be the extra man in the midfield space while also offering quality from wide going forward.

I’m tempted to change the RCM from A to BBM, as the A is too static, and I’ve signed McTominay on a free to test this role, I think it will offer more all round than A, while also being a little more true to life, having someone defensively sound, but also with a good engine in that central area.

Slow tempo is probably the antithesis of de Zerbi’s setup, however in this case, it is a real help in creating the moves from deep. The defensive players dwell on the ball, use the goalkeeper, and allow attackers to close them down, which stretches the opposition team and creates gaps to play/move into, which I feel is the foundation for his philosophy.

It will never be perfectly successful or totally realistic, because like you say, that’s an almost impossible achievement within the limitations of the game, but a healthy dose from each side will work for me!

P.S, I also changed the LW to W role at the start of season 2, and Mitoma already looks twice the player, much more willing to commit and attach defenders to get into dangerous scoring/assisting positions

Regarding striker, I’ve had good success with DLF but always feels like a waste of a good striker, especially as Brighton have Ferguson. I’ve also noticed many successful tactics have Poachers which Ferguson has thrived in for me, so maybe this is a case of ignoring DeZerbi ball? This is highlighted by the fact that with my experiences so far, o have not managed to get the best out of my wide forwards, good to here you’ve had success with Mitoma as a winger, I’ll give that a try.

I also have Sarmiento and Ayari coming because from loan soon and both look to be team stars!! I don’t think either of them are on the wonder kid lists though strangely (might be wrong), maybe loaning system has been improved for player development in this latest version?
