Help Narrow formations

Do narrow formations work as well as formations with wingers, as for me wingers have not been performing well however I don’t ever see people using narrow formations on here

What about the famous Wrexham tactic - which was insanely successful due to just narrow width + wingers , so you didn't look hard enough I think. On the contrary, Wide Width tactics are quite rare to find here, and Narrow builds are used by a lot of people.

Hi Ben,

Starting from FMM23 - it seems now there are TWO types of winger tactics:

1. Wingers with 'normal' or 'wide' team width:

  • these act more like traditional wingers and stay reasonably wide to cross to a ST.
  • Top tip - perhaps your wingers are performing, but your ST isn't good enough in the air?
  • Normally a ST needs 17+ aerial & strength to be aerially dominant in the English Premier League and/or Championship for example
  • (a ST with only 15 aerial & strength is enough to be better than some opposition DCs, but not most of them)

2. Wingers with 'narrow' team width -

  • we discovered these move into central positions (like a STLC and STRC)
  • I have yet to find a tactic which works uses 'narrow width', two wingers AND a sole ST - as this gives you a front 3 (two wingers & a central ST, all relatively narrow) - and the opposition FBs just come inside and its really congested in a 3 attackers vs 4 defenders. I didn't test a lot, but couldn't figure it out so moved on.
  • However the success of the 'updated & great again' welcome to wrexham tactic is that is it narrow width, 2 wingers and 2 STs - which means you have a front four (2x STRC, 2x STLC), the opposition FBs do NOT position themselves inside, and so the opposition DCs are overloaded in a 4 attackers vs 2 defenders situation. It's surprisingly effective.

You can see more about wingers on different widths <here>

Sorry I wasn’t very clear in my post, I meant without wingers such as a 41212 rather than narrow in the instructions

Narrow formation such as 41212 you mentioned will work of course.

I used narrow 23212 in my Luton town save. Works well for me.

But facing opponent who use two wide players, it will be difficult to stop their crossing.
