What roles and instructions are needed for a direct attack?

Guess it depends WHERE you’re going to attack:

• attack through the center? Then you’ll want more players centrally - like a narrow 433 or a 442 diamond, or a 532/352 variant.
• attack via one flank? Then you’ll want more players on that flank - like an asymmetrical 4231 / 4411 where (for example) the AMC is offset to one side.
• attack via both flanks? Then you’ll want more players on both flanks - like a 442, or a 41221.

Also it depends on how DOMINANT your squad is:

• attack through the center? Then again you’ll want more players centrally - like a 244 or a 235.
• attack via both flanks? perhaps a 361 if you’re doing a 1k goal scoring challenge - for example 3 defenders (either 3x DCs or 2 wide defenders + 1 DC), a mix of 4 central midfielders (either 1 DMC + 3 MCs, or 3 MCs + 1 AMC), plus 2 Wingers / DWs, and 1 striker.
