There are tactics in the tactics index thread where counter attack has been used successfully.

So yes it absolutely can be effective.

So there’s a difference between a counter-attack tactic - which often uses deep player positioning + an attacking / overload mentality - like the ‘get off my lawn 4141 tactic …

… and a tactic with counter mentality, which often uses high or normal player positioning (high is better), but uses a counter mentality … you’d have to check the tactics index to find an example

Which do you mean? 🙂

I've used counter mentality for a while now because i tried a lower league team (oxford city), and it works brilliantly. i mostly set the tactic and players almost like route one, because my players are physical and aggressive. i set my strikers either as pressing or target forward, my cb's as no nonesense, both fullbacks defensive, at least one pure winger. most of the time direct passes, also from the goalie. in the midfield, try to put at least one player who's solid at defending and duelling so you don't crumble when the long balls got intercepted or don't work

To be effective and visible in the match, the counterattack must not have pre-set attack zones (center or flanks), it must be free across the entire offensive front (mixed attack zone is the best setting).

A beautiful example of a counter mentality, with players positioned high up the pitch 😉

as you can see from the screenshot the IWB player with the counterattack tactic will not occupy a mainly central space but will make offensive holes whenever there is space. The counterattack tactic must be used with players positioned very far forward, as our friend DanEnglish @DanEnglish  said, this is because the opposing team always uses a defensive, balanced or control attitude, we will see the opposing team use an attacking attitude very few times and only for a few short moments.

the problem is not the counterattack tactics that don't work but the opposing cpu that never exposes itself with an offensive game

So it works but can not work because of the ai managers
