Tactics A bunch of questions about FMM 23

Recommended Posts

Hello, so I've been. Playing fmm 23 for a while now and as someone that has playing the desktop version for a very long time, it took a while to adapt but I really like the game. However, I've got some questions

1) Does the inside forward really not work in the AML/AMR slot?

So some people very knowledgeable about the game have put their inside forwards in the FL/FR slot and it seems to work, however I've seen tactics in the tactics index leaving them in the AML/AMR slot and they get good numbers too. So the question is what is the trade off? Defensively, offensively, is there really a difference. Or is there a situation where one will be better.

2) BBMs, RPMs and APs

On desktop FM, you had roles where you could indicate if it's a defensive, support or attacking role. In FMM, you can't really do that. So when it comes to CM, I usually don't know whether to go with BBM, RPM or AP. I honestly don't know if there's a difference. Let's say you are playing a 4-3-3 with a DM and two CMs. Instead of BlackHawk's grear 4-3-3 system with an RPM and two BBM, I'll want to go with a defensive DM, a BBM/CM and a more attacking CM. What role would you recommend?

This isn't a complaint, I like the game, I'm just trying to understand the game better.

3) Sweepers

Does any one use a sweeper for your CB? O think DanEnglish uses one. Do you notice a difference compared to just using a CB

I can’t comment on the first or third question, but as far as I know,

Defensive midfielders often get really bad ratings, but I’ve noticed an improvement in defensive form when using one.

I haven’t seen many tactics with two defensive midfielders, though. In terms of roles, I prefer box-to-box midfielders, and I’ve had good results with them. There are only two playmaker roles for the midfield in FM Mobile that are used a lot: RPM and AP.

There are others, but I can’t comment on their effectiveness.

I’d say Blackhawk is a good tactic to understand the mobile version but since you want to try something different, a simple combo of BWM at DM, CM/BBM and AP works well but it doesn’t score a lot, you will get a lot of 1-0 wins

Great set of questions.

Firstly IFs in the FR/L are popular because they seem to be more 'offensively' effective - being positioned higher up the pitch means that when your side regains possession, they are right on the opposition's back line, so better positioned for a long ball / through ball / clearance behind the opposition defense (rather than the AMR/L IFs who would have been positioned deeper initially).

However IFs in the FR/L position seem to be less 'defensively' effective - i.e. they are less likely to track back opposition FBs / WBs, especially if the opposition WBs are in the opposition's DMR / L positions. However as most FMM players seem to manage top clubs, or are amongst the better teams / squads in that league for most seasons - people (including me) seem to prefer the offensive effectiveness more than the defensive ineffectiveness.

Here's a beautiful answer for you - in this thread / guide, I explain the difference between AP / RP / B2B / DLP in the MC positions, in the match engine, with screenshots and comparisons about how they move.

(in-possession, on higher mentalities like control or attacking)
 - APs & RPs both move forward & centrally
 - B2Bs move forward but do NOT move centrally
 - BWMs and CMs both stay relatively stable-ish (maybe CM moves forward more on attacking and overload mentalities ... maybe)
 - DLP drops deep and central

Yes I use a sweeper as my DLC. This is because if the opposition plays 2x STs, usually their right sided ST (my left side) has a more attacking / advanced role (Poacher, AF, PF), so I'd like my DLC to hang-back, drop deep, not push up. This is a hope, not an observation though.

On the SI forums I've recommended / asked for clarification about what the sweeper actually does:
"However currently the sweeper does NOT seem to drop back behind the other DCs. Maybe it just ‘does not press’ / ‘does not close down’ opposition attacking midfielders (but that’s a hope, not an observation). Instead the suggestion is that the Sweeper should drop deep (+ a little more central) when the team are both in and out of possession."

Does that help?

Forgot to reply to this question - here's my guidance:

  • Very attacking - move to a different formation - like a 4231 / 4213 (with 2x MCs and 1x AMC)
  • Attacking - 2x B2Bs plus 1x DMC RP
  • A little attacking - 1x RP or AP, 1x B2B, plus 1x DMC DM/Anchor/BWM
  • Balanced - 2x B2Bs plus 1x DMC DM/Anchor/BWM
  • A little defensive - 1x AP/RP/B2B, plus 1x CM/BWM, plus 1x DMC DM/Anchor/BWM
  • Very defensive - 2x CM/BWMs, plus 1x DMC DM/Anchor/BWM

You could change to a DLP (MC position) into these, but that would essentially form a deep double pivot with the DMC (see the 'roles' guide I linked above), but that leaves you with only one central attacking midfielder in front of your deep double pivot.
