Chat Tactic help/suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow managers

I'm trying to do a save in the non league with Torquay, I've tried making my own tactic to no prevail. I've came on here and used multiple to no prevail.

I know some tactics won't work as you need better players for those systems and non league you don't have superstars or Evan stars..

Can anyone link me a tactic or tactics that could work in the none league

Thank you in advance 💓

There is plenty on here buddy for you to have a look at. Having the 1 up front seems to work like a treat, all depends on your team and players and how you want to play. I play a 42121

Loads of tactics will work. But if you have rubbish players, no tactic is so OP that it’ll turn them into stars. Instead you’re looking for a good tactic which suits your players.

Of course the alternative is just to replace your existing squad, signing better players (e.g. free transfers, and/or on loans in). Then most good tactic should help you do well 👍

To analyze your squad, who are the top players in your team. If you have 3 top strikers, then to use a 2~3 fronts formation.

Non-league management is all about pragmatism, simplicity, and maximizing your limited resources. Most “advanced” or “complex” tactics will not work with part-time, low-ability players. Here’s an optimized, proven non-league approach for Torquay or similar clubs:

1) Formation

4-4-2 (Classic, robust, suits non-league player types best. Alternative: 4-4-1-1 or 4-1-4-1 if you lack strikers.)

2) Squad Position & Roles (FM Handheld style)

GK:** Goalkeeper (Defend)

DR:** Full-Back (Defend)

DCR:** Central Defender (Defend)

DCL:** Central Defender (Defend)

DL:** Full-Back (Defend)

MR:** Winger (Support) or Wide Midfielder (Support)

MCR:** Central Midfielder (Support)

MCL:** Ball-Winning Midfielder (Defend)

ML:** Winger (Support) or Wide Midfielder (Support)

STCR:** Target Man (Support) or Deep-Lying Forward (Support)

STCL:** Advanced Forward (Attack) or Poacher (Attack)

Choose “Winger” if you have pace/skill out wide, “Wide Midfielder” if you have workmanlike players. Target Man works wonders at this level due to physical mismatches.

3) Team Mentality

Balanced (You want to stay solid, not overcommit, but not be passive.)

4) Tempo

Normal (Don’t rush; your players will make mistakes at high tempo, but too slow invites pressure.)

5) Width

Balanced (Wide can help if you have good wingers, but keep it simple.)

6) Creative Freedom

Disciplined (Non-league players struggle with “Expressive,” stick to the plan.)

7) Defensive Line

Balanced (High line risks balls over the top, deep means constant pressure. Balanced is safest.)

😎 Opposition Closing Down

Own Half (Pressing “All Over” is too risky at this level; own half gives structure.)

9) Tackling

Committed (Non-league football is physical; assertive tackling can unsettle opponents.)

10) Offside Trap

No (Your defenders will lack the concentration and pace for a reliable trap.)

11) Time Wasting

No (Unless holding a late lead against a stronger side.)

12) Final Third Attack

Early Crosses**

Run at Defence**

Early Crosses to get the ball quickly to your strikers, especially Target Man. Run at Defence if you have pacy wingers. Don’t “Work Into Box” – players will lose the ball.

13) Passing Style

Direct (Long balls, bypass the weak midfield, exploit physicality/height up front.)

14) Passing Focus

Both Flanks (Use width, especially if you have decent full-backs/wingers.)

15) Goalkeeper Distribution

Long (Don’t risk playing short – go long to your Target Man or into space.)

Extra Tips for Non-League FM Success:

  • Use set pieces: Focus on corners and free-kicks; sign tall defenders.
  • Rotate: Avoid fatigue, your players aren’t full-time pros.
  • Use loan players: Especially for key positions or to add pace.
  • Don’t over-complicate: Keep instructions simple, avoid fancy roles.

This approach will make your team hard to beat and give you a fighting chance in every game.
