Chat Xabi alonso tactic

Recommended Posts

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen (2023/24) was renowned for its fluid, attacking football, quick transitions, and positional play, with a back three and wing-backs providing width. Here’s how you can replicate his tactics:

1) Formation

3-4-2-1

GK

DC (Central Defender)

DC (Ball-Playing Defender)

DC (Central Defender)

WBR (Wing-Back, Right - Attacking)

WBL (Wing-Back, Left - Attacking)

MC (Deep-Lying Playmaker/CM-Defend)

MC (Box-to-Box/CM-Support)

AMR (Inside Forward/Shadow Striker)

AML (Inside Forward/Shadow Striker)

ST (Advanced Forward/Pressing Forward)

2) Squad Position & Roles

GK:** Sweeper Keeper (Support)

DCR:** Ball-Playing Defender (Defend)

DC:** Central Defender (Cover/Defend)

DCL:** Central Defender (Defend)

WBR:** Wing-Back (Attack)

WBL:** Wing-Back (Attack)

MCR:** Central Midfielder (Support/Box-to-Box)

MCL:** Deep-Lying Playmaker (Defend)

AMR:** Inside Forward or Shadow Striker (Attack)

AML:** Inside Forward or Shadow Striker (Attack)

ST:** Advanced Forward or Pressing Forward (Attack)

3) Team Mentality

Control (use Attacking at home vs. weaker teams, but Control most of the time for possession + proactive play)

4) Tempo

Fast (Leverkusen played with quick transitions and ball movement)

5) Width

Wide (Wing-backs push high and wide to stretch opposition)

6) Creative Freedom

Balanced (Alonso’s system had structure but allowed attacking players to improvise)

7) Defensive Line

High (Leverkusen pressed high and squeezed the pitch)

8) Opposition Closing Down

All Over (Intense pressing, especially in advanced areas)

9) Tackling

Normal (Not overly aggressive, but not cautious; balanced pressing/tackling)

10) Offside Trap

Yes (High defensive line + offside trap was a key feature)

11) Time Wasting

No (They kept the tempo high and looked to attack)

12) Final Third Attack

Look for Overlap** (Wingbacks get forward)

Work into Box** (Short, patient build-up)

Through Balls** (For quick vertical attacks)

Leverkusen used all three: overlapping wingbacks, patient short play, and quick vertical passes into space

13) Passing Style

Short (Lots of short, quick combinations)

14) Passing Focus

Mixed (Attacks built centrally but also used width through wing-backs)

15) Goalkeeper Distribution

Short (Sweeper-keeper played out from the back)

Tips:

  • Use fast, technical wing-backs.
  • Your central midfield should be composed, one deep-lying, one box-to-box.
  • Prioritize players with stamina, work rate, and off the ball movement.
  • Use Shadow Strikers/Inside Forwards to replicate the likes of Wirtz and Hofmann.

This is my Xabi Alonso tactic that I made based on

The Tactic:

Shape.thumb.jpeg.169c3a4eb894c50e83617973377798fc.jpeg

Note:

1. Tweak tactic based on your player. For example, Hofmann only have 12 Shooting, if he have good Shooting, I will change his role as AM.

2. Xabi is using double pivot with 2 pair of DLP or 1 DLP pair with 1 DM. Choose the role based on your player attributes, like if your player have good passing, playing it as DLP, if not playing as DM.

3. Boniface and Schick have good physicality and good aerial, considering to play it as Target Forward, but overall I prefer playing it as Advanced Forward.
