Career The Yeovil Town Rebirth

Recommended Posts

Welcome to my career with Yeovil Town.

Once a Championship club rubbing shoulders with the likes of QPR and Leicester, Yeovil Town’s fall has been steep and brutal. From the heights of the second tier in 2013–14, the Glovers have endured back-to-back relegations, financial instability, and a slow drift into obscurity. Now buried in the Vanarama National League South — the sixth tier of English football — the club is a shadow of its former self. The stadium still holds echoes of big nights, but the squad and facilities scream non-league survival. My job? Drag this club back from the dirt and make Huish Park believe again.

My aim with Yeovil isn’t to sprint to the top — it’s to rebuild the right way. No short-term fixes, no unrealistic expectations. I want to lay foundations, develop a clear identity, and gradually guide the club back toward where it once stood. If it takes time, so be it. This is about restoring pride, structure, and belief — and eventually bringing the good times back to Huish Park.

Hope you Stick around and Follow the Journey

Tactical Approach

For this campaign, I went bold — a funky but highly effective 3-4-3 system that looked more like a broken mirror than a traditional formation: RB-CB-LB at the back, flanked by RM and LM providing width, two central midfielders, and a front three of RW, CF, and LW. It wasn’t conventional, but it worked wonders. We racked up 30 wins, 10 draws, and only 6 losses — scoring a monstrous 117 goals while conceding 58. Clean sheets were rare, but who needs ‘em when you’re blowing teams away with sheer firepower?

Transfer Market Masterstrokes

With the club on a tight budget, I knew the free agent and loan markets were my battlegrounds. Enter: Alex Bruce, a free agent forward with a “rash” personality that surprisingly flagged him as consistent. I took the gamble, and it paid off big time — 51 goals, 6 assists, and an outrageous 8.31 average rating across 41 appearances. For any non-league manager out there: Bruce is a must-sign. To complement him, I brought in Raekwan Nelson on loan from Bristol City. Just 18 years old, but he lit up the left flank as an Inside Forward with 19 goals and 13 assists in 46 games. Absolutely electric.

Standout Performers

Our attack was devastating, and it started with our front line. Alongside Bruce and Nelson, Jordan Young became the engine of creativity and clutch finishing — racking up 24 goals and 20 assists, 13 of those goals coming from the penalty spot. His vision and delivery were vital, feeding Bruce with pinpoint passes and crosses. In midfield, Matt Worthington wasn’t flashy on the stat sheet, but he was the heartbeat of the side — breaking up play, throwing himself into challenges, and setting the tone for our press. Sam Pearson, deployed as a defensive winger, added tactical balance with 16 assists and 14 key passes, working tirelessly on the left to track back and spring forward.

Season Summary

We ended the season as champions with 100 points — a landmark campaign built on attacking bravery and key individual brilliance. Despite lacking a defined corner routine (default settings all the way), we still found ways to dominate both open play and dead-ball situations. This wasn’t a fluke season — it was the foundation of something real. Yeovil are back on the climb.

Just completed my first season in the national league. And got promoted via play offs. As well as won the FA trophy.

One thing I found was I was getting very mixed results tough games I'd go to balanced and get beat badly Evan remaining on attacl got beat easily. And against weak teams I'd still get smashed. But most games I just put scored. Issue with lower league is your not gunna get the players for this system until maybe 2 or 3 seasons into tje championship to build properly.

But saying that we still got back to back promotion and will be back in the football league as of next season

Il post my results and league table and team.

Overall the tactic is fun

Season 3: Our Return to the Football League – Sky Bet League Two Champions (108 Points)

Having battled our way back into the Football League, the board set a cautious objective for our return to League Two: avoid relegation. But I had other plans — and by the end of the season, we weren’t just safe, we were champions, racking up an incredible 108 points.

Summer Shake-Up: Selling Smart, Reinforcing Right

A big summer awaited, and it started with three major outgoings — all free signings previously, now sold at full profit:

Charlie McNeill, signed last season on a free, was sold to Portsmouth for £130k.

Club talisman Jordan Young departed for £800k to Huddersfield — a huge decision but necessary for growth.

First-choice keeper Jacob Knightbridge, also a freebie, left for £650k.

With the funds raised and a reshaped vision, I transitioned away from the high-risk 1-at-the-back setup and implemented a more stable and structured 4-3-2-1 formation, aimed at balancing defensive solidity and attacking fluency.

Key Arrivals: Free Agents & Smart Buys

Josh Thomas, released by Swansea, joined on a free. He’d go on to be a season-defining signing.

Ronnie Hollingshead, a goalkeeper released from West Brom, came in to replace Knightbridge.

David Watson, a standout young midfielder from Kilmarnock, signed for £800k — a marquee addition.

Diogo Monteiro was loaned in from Leeds to bolster our back line.

Early Season Form: Statement of Intent

The season opener was a thrilling 2-2 draw vs Sutton, but what followed set the tone — five consecutive wins, including notable victories:

Over Chesterfield in the league.

A stunning upset over West Brom in the Carabao Cup.

By January, we were punching well above our weight:

Only 6 defeats in all competitions.

Took Premier League side Nottingham Forest to penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Carabao Cup.

Knocked out League One side Stevenage in the EFL Trophy, before narrowly losing to Bristol Rovers.

January Madness: The Market Erupts

Then came January — and it exploded.

Josh Thomas, after scoring 26 goals in 41 games, was snapped up by Bristol City for a jaw-dropping £4.5 million.

Charlie Lennon, signed two years ago for £14k, moved to Barnsley for £1.8 million.

Malik Wilks, a National League free agent gem, joined Birmingham for £775k.

Alfredo Alcázar, a £95k project from Spain, left for £300k to Charlton.

Investing for the Future: Replacements Inbound

Every penny was used wisely. Four key signings transformed the squad:

Aral Şimşir – striker, £1.2m. Immediate impact.

Hayden Coulson – attacking left-back, £675k.

Nathan Ferguson – versatile right-back, £400k.

Emmanuel Fernandez – powerful centre-back, £140k.

At the same time, I invested heavily into upgrading both the youth and training facilities — a clear message that this club isn’t just aiming to survive, but thrive.

Run-In and Glory: Title Clinched in Style

From January to the end of the season:

17 wins, 5 draws, just 1 defeat across all competitions.

We stormed to the League Two title with 108 points, playing expressive, energetic, and fearless football. What began as a survival mission turned into a masterclass in tactical evolution, smart recruitment, and financial prowess.

Watson turns into a decent little midfielder, shame you sold thomas, he is a quality striker, WD on promotions buddy, keep a good eye on the free transfer market, always some talent knocking around, or loans

Also I think Nathan ferguson has a bad attitude or lazy, one of them, it can have a massive effect on the team. I look for players with a professional outlook as much better on team/morale

Hi bud

Yeah Thomas is phenomenal and i would love to have kept him. The initial bid that came in was 2.8m in which I was gunna reject so I raised it to 4.5m and when they matched it I thought of many things.

1: it's alot of money to keep my club afloat

2: my youth facilities were 1* and training was 1.5*. With the sale my youth facilities are now are now 3.5* and my training ground is 3*. Since the upgrades none of my players keep asking to leave anymore because gosh they kept bitching about there growth being hindered due to the training facilities pmsl.

I also managed to get 1 upgrade on the stadium (i dunno if the stadium actually contributes to anything financially)

As for Ferguson he will likely end up being replaced but his current personality is insecure and wilts under pressure. Which are huge red flags. The whole personality traits i don't quite understand i do look out for consistent as I know that's good.

Well yeah, you can't argue with that buddy. Ahhh ranging from game to game I think, Watson was super for me when I signed him. I remember Thomas being a beast for me right through League 2 up to the Prem, but your signings look pretty decent, so you should be ok buddy

Yeovil Town – 2026/27 Season Review

From the South to the Championship

League / Competition

Sky Bet League One

Board objective was to avoid relegation. We finished 2nd and gained automatic promotion, but it was far from smooth sailing. After a strong campaign, our form dipped dramatically near the end with only 4 wins in our final 11 games. It all came down to the last match. A draw against Burton left our fate hanging by a thread, but Birmingham lost 3-0 on the final day, allowing us to sneak over the line. Preston deservedly won the title.

24481871_Screenshot_20250527_135951_FM24Mobile.thumb.jpg.9f7e17fd66293df7ed04182a4bb1f295.jpg

Transfers In

As usual I dipped into the free agent market and brought in some experienced veterans.

James Tarkowski was the first to arrive at 33, followed by Italian international Domenico Berardi – a massive coup for the club after shifting all my budget into wages.

Oscar Bridgman came in as backup striker and did surprisingly well in rotation.

Remi Matthews joined as a backup keeper on low wages.

In terms of paid signings, Roman Dixon joined for £3 million from Peterborough. A fellow group member @leedsunited87pointed out that Nathan Ferguson's personality wasn't ideal, so I acted fast.

Amani Richards arrived from Ipswich for £2.6 million. Played as a pressing forward, not his natural role, but still delivered an impressive 24 goals.

I also brought in youth prospects King John Lookman and Kohei Onose for £55k and £14k respectively – future investments.

A loan signing came in from Manchester United – McHale – who performed brilliantly in the roaming playmaker role in defensive midfield.

258448965_Screenshot_20250527_140105_FM24Mobile.thumb.jpg.e3c07050bf50bbb87a6c46d901f471c2.jpg

Transfers Out

Aral Simşir left for £2.8 million, a tidy £1.6 million profit from his previous arrival.

Sam Pearson, who had been with us since the National South days, departed in January with just six months left on his deal, moving to Coventry for £725k.

Nathan Ferguson was used in the part-exchange deal for Roman Dixon.

Youth Intake

A decent intake by League One standards. Unfortunately, we lost two prospects – Dave Price to Reading and Themba Sharples to Salford. Thankfully, the tribunals rewarded us £550k and £375k in compensation respectively.

This spooked me enough to promote the entire youth intake. In came Ellis, Brook, Gray, Habergham, Titchmarsh, Esse, Quick, Hockenhull, Sharples, Mathie, and Price. Two of them look like potential Championship players.

All were loaned out immediately to newly acquired affiliates, mainly in the National League North and South.

Screenshot_20250527_133311_Gallery.thumb.jpg.86dc09fa07d5c8c08001b3a3e55767a8.jpg

One affiliate, Hendon, had no real history. I loaned them five players and they ended up finishing second in the Southern League and winning promotion via the play-offs. Huge congratulations to them.

1442981797_Screenshot_20250527_140539_FM24Mobile.thumb.jpg.d8a6fafc45329ea4d384d2c87e648b07.jpg

Key Players

Domenico Berardi

Amani Richards

Sonny Lo-Everton (a club stalwart since the South league days)

Roman Dixon

James Tarkowski

Top Scorer / Assists

Top scorer: Amani Richards with 24 goals

Runner-up: Berardi with 16 goals

Top assister: Kerem Demirbay with 12

Second most assists: Berardi with 11

Trophies / Achievements

We reached the semi-finals of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy – a competition I had a personal ambition to win. With promotion now secured, we’ll no longer be eligible to compete in it moving forward. The defeat to Oxford was gutting, not just because of how close we were, but because it felt like the last realistic shot at lifting it with this squad.

Knocked out in the First Round of the FA Cup

Reached the Third Round of the Carabao Cup

Club Development / Infrastructure

When I first took over Yeovil in the National League South, the club was struggling behind the scenes. Training facilities were 1.5 stars and youth facilities sat at just 1 star. Fast forward to today, our training ground has been upgraded to 3.5 stars and the youth setup now boasts 4 stars — a huge leap in just a few seasons.

This progress has been largely funded by a sustainable transfer model: signing free agents on the rise or undervalued veterans, developing them, and selling for profit. It's not just results on the pitch — we’re building something long-lasting off it too.

Manager Notes / Reflections

I came into the season expecting a mid-table finish and would’ve taken it happily.

But we defied expectations again. From the National South to the Championship in just a few seasons – it’s been an incredible journey.

The end-of-season form was concerning and will need addressing, but overall, I couldn’t be prouder. Yeovil are rising.

And before I end.

This player came through my academy end of last season. Could he end up being a long term GK for me?
