                                                                                               ENDGAME 2.0

A modern Vertical Tiki-Taka system built around fluid possession, high pressing, and central dominance.

The 3-1-4-2 formation provides excellent balance between build-up stability and attacking threat — a back three offers security in transitions, while the single pivot dictates tempo and recycles possession. Two central midfielders and advanced wingers maintain constant movement and overloads in key areas, creating quick vertical combinations that break defensive lines.

Off the ball, the tactic employs a high defensive line, all-over pressing, and normal tackling intensity, designed to win possession back early and sustain attacking momentum.

In possession, the focus is on short passing, working the ball into the box, and looking for overlaps to stretch opposition defences. The team operates with an expressive creative freedom, encouraging movement, risk-taking, and intelligent positional rotation.

The setup thrives against compact or defensive opponents and is ideal for sides that value control through structured chaos — dominating possession while attacking with vertical speed and precision.

Best used with technically sound defenders, dynamic midfielders, and forwards who link play well. When used correctly, this approach delivers a mix of possession control, pressing aggression, and fluid attacking football reminiscent of elite modern systems.

🎯 Set-Piece: Attacking Corners (Near-Post Routine)

This setup focuses on near-post delivery — a fast, high-percentage approach that creates chaos in the box while maintaining defensive balance.

  • Delivery: Near Post

  • Primary Threat: One central defender attacks the near post to meet the ball aggressively.

  • Secondary Threats: Other centre-backs attack the far post or move forward to challenge for rebounds.

  • Edge Control: Two midfielders lurk outside the area to recover clearances and recycle possession.

  • Defensive Cover: Three players remain back (typically a holding midfielder and two wide players) to prevent counter-attacks.

Why it works:
Near-post corners are quick, difficult to defend, and often generate flick-ons or rebounds.
Maintains attacking pressure through second balls.
Provides adequate cover against fast breaks.

⚙️ Adjustments for Smaller or Weaker Teams

When using this Vertical Tiki-Taka system with less technically gifted squads, the goal is to preserve structure and compactness while reducing risk in possession.

🔁 Mentality & Shape

  • Change Mentality: from OverloadBalanced or Control
→ Slows the tempo, lowers defensive exposure, and keeps the team compact.

  • Width: keep Balanced or slightly Narrow
→ Helps protect central areas and maintain compactness.

  • Creative Freedom: shift from ExpressiveBalanced
→ Limits risky passes and dribbles from players with low decision or technique.

🧱 Defensive Adjustments

  • Defensive Line: Lower from HighBalanced
→ Reduces vulnerability to long balls and fast counterattacks.

  • Closing Down: From All OverOwn Half
→ Preserves stamina and keeps defensive shape intact.

  • Tackling: Keep Normal or switch to Cautious if you pick up many fouls/cards.

  • Offside Trap: Turn Off — less coordination required for weaker defenders.

These tweaks make the defence more compact, prioritizing structure over aggression.

In Possession Adjustments

  • Passing Style: Keep Short or switch to Mixed if players struggle under pressure.

  • Tempo: From NormalSlow
→ Gives players more time to make decisions and reduces turnovers.

  • Final Third:

    • Turn off Work Into Box → use Shoot On Sight if creativity is low.

    • Keep Run At Defence only if your wingers have good dribbling.

  • Goalkeeper Distribution: Use Mixed or Long if playing out from the back causes mistakes.

🔄 Formation Tweaks (Optional)

If you’re still struggling defensively:

  • Drop the attacking midfielder into a DM role (switch to a 3-2-3-2).

  • Use one winger as a Defensive Wide Midfielder to protect the flanks.

  • Change one striker to a Target Forward or Pressing Forward to hold the ball better during transitions.

⚙️ Tactic Adaptation Table — Adjusting for Weaker Teams

Tactical Area Original Setup (Strong Team) Adjusted Setup (Weaker Team) Purpose of Change
Mentality Overload Balanced / Control Reduces risk and defensive exposure
Creative Freedom Expressive Balanced Limits risky passes & poor decisions
Width Balanced Slightly Narrow Improves compactness centrally
Tempo Normal Slow / Normal Gives players more time on the ball
Passing Style Short Mixed / Short Adapts to lower technical ability
Defensive Line High Balanced / Lower Prevents balls over the top
Closing Down All Over Own Half Preserves stamina and shape
Tackling Normal Cautious Reduces fouls & cards
Offside Trap On Off Avoids positioning errors
Final Third Focus Work Into Box Shoot on Sight / Mixed Increases chance creation for limited teams
Goalkeeper Distribution Short Mixed / Long Reduces risky build-up errors
Formation Option 3-1-4-2 3-2-3-2 (extra DM) Adds defensive cover in midfield
Forward Roles Creative Link Pair Target or Pressing Forward + Support Improves hold-up play and counters

A tactics with WCB!

How about the movement of WCB in your tactics ? Do they work as your expected? Please share

In this 3-1-4-2 setup, the wide centre-backs are crucial to maintaining both structure and progression. They drift wide during build-up to create passing triangles, carry the ball forward when space opens up, and provide defensive width when wingers push high. Essentially, they act as hybrid defenders — part ball-carrier, part full-back — ensuring the team stays compact in defence yet expansive in possession. Their role allows smooth transitions, controlled vertical progression, and protection against wide counterattacks.

Hey tactic looks amazing. Would it work in the National league south?

there expectation is avoid relagation

The original Vertical Tiki-Taka system assumes your team can:

  • Maintain possession under pressure,

  • Execute short, precise passing in tight spaces, and

  • Sustain high pressing and recovery intensity.

In National League South, these are exactly the areas where players often struggle — poor first touch, slower decisions, and low stamina.
Using the full Overload + High Line + All-Over Press version would leave your team exposed and drained

But you can make the adjustements that I have mentioned for weak teams and give it a try..

How's the defense? In your opinion

Conceded 37 last season with zero new transfers and original squad.

However I feel liverpool is the new man City this season

It looks nice.

How's the United save going? I'm just about to start mine.

Transfers? How did that work?

And what are the main new features and how do you reckon they're working?

With my Man Utd save i  only buy cheap wonderkids if available, otherwise I don't do any marquee signing as the game gets broken and too easy in 2-3 seasons. So I have not yet made any significant signing. Its almost orginal squad, but I took Rashford in 🤭.

Besides that on tactical front I am trying this new WCB role with this tactic other wise I would have used NCB
