Career Brazilian Triple Threat

After becoming one of the world's greatest managers, it's time to throw myself into another challenge. It's not going to be one of the ridiculous things that the real pros do, but there are a few I've wanted to tick off years ago but never got round to (and to be fair, when I started, I did think these challenges seemed ridiculous myself). Now that I have a bit of time on my hands, I can get round to them.

 

Far and away, my favourite player in the last campaign was Luis Guilherme, so I needed something that could star him. Enter the Brazilian Triple Threat. 

 

3 striker formation (wide or central is fine), 1500 goals between your three main strikers over their career. International goals only count if all three are the same nationality and you're managing them at the time. (The Brazilian is optional, but given I'm going Guilherme, I went Brazilian with the other two so I could get the international goals.)

 

As well as challenges, there are some leagues I've wanted to go to, but never have (I always seemed to default to Portugal for challenges in the past). As I think this won't be too hard a challenge, I'm upping the difficulty by going to one of the tougher leagues on my list:

Setting up:

 

I don't think I've ever done a three striker formation before, so I did a bit of experimenting in advance. I wanted to go for wide AFs or IFs, but they just weren't getting involved enough for my liking so I eventually settled on this: 

- 3-4-3 with all three strikers central 

- one DLF to drop deep and create space for the others (probably P or AF)

- battling central midfield

- creativity coming from IWs, or maybe inverted feet WMs

- if I can find (or eventually develop) anyone good enough then I'll have some width coming from WCBs

 

That's the general principle I'm aiming for, but I'll be constantly tinkering with it.

Nothing too special about this game, but it's the match where the three of them (two really, Guilherme is still injured) hit the one-goal-per-game ratio

 

 

They immediately failed to score in the next match, ruining the ratio! But straight after that got this: 

 

I've stayed ahead of the goal-per-game mark ever since. 

 

 

 

It's not been the best start as I juggle a tough league with below-par young strikers and a formation I've never used before:

At the winter break, the league looks like this. The board are not happy and I need to get into those Champions League places, otherwise I could fail the challenge by being sacked in season one!

During the winter break, I reassessed some of my youngsters and these three are going to be much more prominent going forwards:

This is a constant worry though. 

 

I've definitely improved my form a lot, but Bayern, Dortmund and Frankfurt just ahead of me just won't drop points! (And Leverkeusen are way ahead of those three)

 

Crunch game came against Dortmund. Win, I'm in the Champions League spots and pressure is off. Lose, and I'm getting cut adrift...

Even better, Frankfurt and Bayern played each other the same weekend and drew. Pressure off, and I stayed safe the rest of the season, even chasing down Leverkeusen when they lost their manager. 

 

 

 

I ended up finishing 2nd, behind Bayern on goal difference. It definitely feels weird both not winning the league in one of these challenges, and not having the best goal difference by a mile. But I have picked a tougher league so I guess it makes sense. 

 

I did win the cup though: 

 

 

48 goals across the main men. Not great, but it'll do as a start. Another 22 from their back ups too is a decent sign. These numbers need to improve a lot, but they will as the players develop and I get more matches by being in Europe.

Not really as I keep fiddling with it. I'm not fully happy and my players change through the season. In season 2 I'm currently swapping between 4 main tactics (all a 3-4-3 set up, but otherwise different) and even then occasionally tinker with it.

 

That's why I just gave a tactical overview as something that's consistent across all my tactics.

Season 2

As well as the big three, there were some other nice improvements last season:

Nusa's development combined with Rayan's aerial meant I shifted tactics a bit to include a W on the right side. I've also bought a couple of youngsters (Kharebashvili and Mokio) who I'm hoping can turn into WCBs with some good crossing to add more width on the left of my attacks next season. 

During the World Cup, Brazil got knocked out by USA in the quarter finals, meaning the job came up for grabs and...

I really like this national search tool, very nice addition.

Got knocked out of UCL by Liverpool. Beat them 1-0 at home, and then this happened!

I had already been thinking about ways to change the tactic, I've not been too happy both with games against the best teams, but also not really destroying weaker teams as much as I should. Tried something different in my next game and this is the result:

Low sample size obviously (one game...) but promising signs. 433 with advanced WBs, RP in the DM position and 2 CMs. Will need tinkering, but will try this going forwards. 

Finished the season winning the domestic double pretty comfortably:

Here are the 3 boys: 

81 goals between them. An improvement, but I am slightly disappointed. Feel I should be breaking 100 with how good they are. Definitely want to be doing better than this for League top scorers!

I found it tricky to get him too. I think it was reading the Wonderkid list post I learned that Mexico opens up some Brazilian wonderkids and with a bit of experimenting I found Mexico to be best too (better even than Argentina) 

 

I have Germany, England and Mexico loaded up in my save.

Season 3

 

I've settled on this formation for now: 

 

Tactics and roles keep getting tinkered with, but I know the type of players in aiming for now.

Some of my wonderkids just didn't come on how I was hoping, or didn't fit the system, so I cashed in on them. Happy with the incomings too (especially my scout letting me know I could get Fermin for only 18M, after buying realising that I couldn't retrain him to fit my system, then immediately part exchanging him to afford the previously unattainable Bouaddi)

 

Targets for this season: 

 

Bare minimum - 100 goals

Actual target - 125 goals

Additional targets - league top scorer, and all three in the top 10

The team had a fantastic season. Seven draws (two that were in finals and I won on penalties) and only one loss (which was a first leg, and I went through after winning the second leg) - and every other game was a win!

Unfortunately, this isn't a challenge to win trophies, it's to score goals. And there are a lot of 1 and 2 goals scored matches, and not enough 4 or 5. Not a single 6 in competitive matches! So as good as the season seems, it was quite a disappointment. 

Did get Rayan top scorer and Guilherme third (I don't mind that Elias missed out given the injuries). But just under 100 domestic goals is not going to be good enough. I'll add the international goals in another post as the Copa America overlaps the end of the season.

Also not great. Ten goals in total. If I carry on at the current rate, I think it will take me 16 seasons to complete this, and the boys will be old men by then and won't be able to keep up the current rate! 

 

I'm going to be experimenting with some other tactics in a new save to try and get things going better before I start season 4. Hopefully I come up with something good!

Thanks. The tactic's good for the team, but not for ridiculous goals for the strikers, and that's what this challenge is all about. I'm not happy with it right now - trying to find something to get more goals, even if I lose a few games (although I can't bring myself to go for anything unrealistic like one CB)

 

I'll probably keep this tactic saved for big European games though

Pre-Season 4

I forgot that I had to finish off the Copa America during the summer, so here a mini-update for the tournament.

The priority here was winning to be able to keep the job for as long as possible. Goals for my three boys are a bonus right now, they can fill their boots during WC qualifying and in friendlies. With that in mind, I'll play the new goal scoring tactic in easy matches, but when the knock out rounds look tricky, I'll use last season's "vs Big Team" tactic which served me so well in the UCL.

The focus wasn't on goals, but I think that 10 in 5 games isn't a bad return. 

 

Really helped by this match after the group stage: 

 

And the boys got their first (hopefully of many) award clean sweeps. 

Now... on to the main season!

Probably won't get the season finished until after the weekend, but at the winter break...

... things are going much better than previous seasons! 74 goals and not even half way through the season yet (although the Copa America did add more fixtures to this first section)
