Foxy got a reaction from BatiGoal in The Strikerless Series: Shadow Striker vs Trequartista
If you are planning on playing strikerless tactics it’s likely you will use either a Shadow striker (SS) or a Trequartista (Treq) as one of your central attacking midfielders. They are probably the most attacking options you have in that area of the pitch to choose from and I felt it would be a good idea to take a look at the roles. It’s hard to give a definitive answer to which role you should go with as it depends on the players you have at your disposal. Hopefully I can give you some ideas as to what you might expect if you use either role.
I took over at Bayern and played a season using both roles in a tactic to see who would score more, who would assist more and generally what they do during games. I choose to sign Milinovic Savic as my SS and Marco Acensio to play a my Treq. They are both of a similar age and ability so I felt they would suit this article.
I did consider cloning a player and using two identical players in the roles but I simply couldn’t get interested in the save so I abandoned it and went with these two instead. I need to enjoy what I do so I went with this approach instead of something that could be considered an experiment but I hope we can learn something from this that we can use in our future saves.
    The Roles
What does the game have to tell us about the two roles? In theory the game tells us that a SS should be looking to get himself into goalscoring positions compared to a Treq who will act more like a very attacking advanced playmaker. The SS certainly sounds like he should be more suited to a high pressing game as he should look to close down defenders whereas the Treq does very little defensively. Of course this is all theory and it will be interesting to see if the player stats show these things happening or not.

    Important Attributes
When we are looking for players to play these roles what attributes should we be looking for? I took these important attributes from our A-Z guide by PriZe which can be found here. I have marked the most important attributes gold and secondary attributes in silver.
I could have played either player in both roles really as when you look at the players attributes they have good numbers in all areas. What made me choose Savic as the SS is that he has less creativity compared to Acensio and the Treq role requires more creativity in theory. Also Savic has better defensive attributes and the SS should contribute more without the ball than the Treq will although in turn Acensio does have better shooting compared to Savic so it was a decision that could have gone either way. Acensio does lack teamwork and it will be interesting to see if that has any impact on the amount of assists he gets over the season. I don’t feel we need to look at each attribute in turn as I looked at some of them in the first article and many of them are quite self-explanatory.

    The Tactic
The tactic I used was based around the tactics in the second part of this series and had the same team instructions. I wanted to give as many opportunity’s to our SS and Treq so I dropped the central attacking midfielder back into CM as a AP so that we could try and focus on the two roles this article is looking at. This wasn’t a killer tactic as we missed out on winning the league a point although we did win the German Cup and the Champions League. The problem I found was that it was too focused on the SS and Treq and if teams could stop them we didn’t have any other goal threats in the team and that led to too many draws in the league. Of course my aim was to focus on those two roles so the tactic did serve its purpose and a Champions League win isn’t bad with a less than optimal tactic. I used this tactic in all games unless we had a sending off.

    In game situations
Watching the in game highlights didn’t show a huge difference between the two roles. Savic did perhaps close down a little more than Acensio but not often enough to make it worth showing any footage and I can find times when Acensio did close down as well. I do have a couple of screen shots that can show the kind of positions that the players took up in match but I think to see any true differences we will need to look at the stats later on.
This first screenshot shows the problem I mentioned before about teams manging to stifle our front two. They are both quite isolated from the rest of the team and have 2 defenders marking them although a nice gap has opened up between the two Real CB’s that Acensio (ringed in red) can attack if Veratti can find him with a good pass.

What formation are we playing? I love this screenshot as it shows just how player roles impact the positions players take up in the match. If someone showed me this picture and asked me what formation Bayern where playing I would say a 442 narrow diamond as the SS and Treq are in striker positions and the AP has moved out of central midfield an into the hole behind them.
You can also see that in game the SS and Treq take up very similar positions when the team are attacking and it would be hard to tell which is which.

    Stats
Lets take a look at how they both did through the season. We will look at the most important stuff first which is goals and assists and then I have a selection of games from the Champions League where we can take a look at what else these roles get up to.

The common consensus seems to be that the Treq will score more goals than the SS in the EME and so it proved with Acensio scoring more than double the amount of goals through the season than Savic. Interestingly Asensio only had 6 assists all season compared to the 22 that Savic had and this despite the game telling us that the Treq role is similar to an AP. I think a big reason for this is that Savic has teamwork of 15 whereas Asensio’s is only 12, so Savic was perhaps being less selfish with the ball and setting up a lot of Asensio’s goals. The reason I choose Acensio to be the Treq was because he had more creativity than Savic but as we have seen that didn’t stop Savic getting a lot of assists.
We scored 95 goals in the season with these two contributing exactly half of them, which in itself is a surprise as well as I expected them to score a bigger proportion of our goals. The AP that I had in central midfield which was predominately played by James Rodriquez actually out scored Savic with 21 goals and had 22 assists the same as Savic. It seemed through out the season that Savic was playing more of a support role to these two. It maybe that Savic simply didn’t have a good season but I have to say considering what a good player he is it isn’t a great advert for the SS role.
How about other areas of the game such as passes and tackles? The in game descriptions tell us that the Treq will do very little defensively and simply float around looking for space whereas the SS will pressure the opposition defenders to try and win the ball back. So you would expect that the SS would have make more tackles and interceptions that the Treq.
I decided that I would record the stats for our two players from our Champions League games starting from the quarter finals. This gave me five games against top opposition to see how many passes, tackles, interceptions and shoots our two players had.
These where the games I looked at.
Quarter Final vs Real Madrid: 1st leg 1-1, 2nd leg 3-0. Bayern won 4-1 on aggregate.
Semi Final vs Liverpool: 1st leg 0-0, 2nd leg 3-0. Bayern won 3-0 on aggregate
Final vs PSG: 1-1. Bayern won 3-1 on penalties.
Unsurprisingly Acensio outscored Savic in these five games with the Treq getting 5 goals compared to just the one for the SS.

    Passes and Key Passes
This an interesting one as based on the role descriptions we would think that the SS role would be much more interested in getting into goal scoring positions than getting involved in the build-up play compared to the Treq. We don’t see that here though with Savic attempting more passes compared to Asencio although Acensio was much more successful with his passes. When we look at the key passes they made we see that over the five games they made the same number of both key passes and assists in these games. In fact Asensio got one third of his seasons assists in these five games.
I think we are seeing the high teamwork attribute of Savic in play here as he wants to contribute to the whole team and not be selfish and just looking for goals. When we see Savic’s assists over the season I think we can see that’s true with Savic proving to be a true team player.
    Tackles and Interceptions
The role descriptions tell us that the SS should close down defenders when we don’t have possession whereas the Treq will float around looking for space and won’t contribute much to the defensive side of the game. Well we don’t really see that here with both the number of tackles and interceptions being very similar. I didn’t expect to see a great number of tackles from either of them as they are playing in attacking roles and lets face it we don’t see a huge number of tackles in this game any way e.g. in the final versus PSG Asencio made two tackles and Mats Hummels playing centre back only made one tackle all game.  What I expected to see was a good number of interceptions from the SS as he closes players down and tries to close passing lanes between the opposition defenders and midfielders. We do see that Savic did make two more interceptions compared to Acensio over the five games but we did see tackles and interceptions from the Treq so perhaps it’s not strictly true that the Treq won’t contribute defensively for the team. Much of this depends as well on the type of player you have in the Treq role as a player with low teamwork probably will be more lazy when he doesn’t have the ball.
    Shots
No big difference with the numbers of shots these two had but we did see Asencio have more shots on target. I would put that down to Acensio having a better shooting stat. What is interesting to see is that we don’t see a large difference between the number of shoots we see from both roles.

    Conclusion
It’s hard to argue that the Treq role scores more goals compared to the SS based on this season but also with other tests I have done preparing for this series of articles where the Treq has consistently out scored the SS although not always as comprehensively as in this season. I think its interesting to see how the players you use in a role can effect how that roles plays. We see Savic playing as the SS and creating 22 goals through the season most likely because he is a team player. We see Asencio playing as a Treq which is labelled as a more attacking advanced playmaker and he only creates 6 goals all season. I think in part that was one of those freak occurrences you can get on this game as I have had Treq’s create decent amounts of goals in other test saves. Based on this save and other saves I have done to prepare for this series I would say that I prefer the Treq role over the SS role as it seems to yield more goals for the team.
I hope you have enjoyed this look at the Treq and SS roles and what they can contribute to your team. Have you used either of these roles and how did you find them in your team?

Foxy got a reaction from BatiGoal in The Strikerless Series: Shadow Striker vs Trequartista
    The Strikerless Series
    Introduction
In the last couple of weeks strikerless formations have become a bit of an FMM obsession of mine and so it became obvious to me that I should write down some of my thoughts and findings on the subject. As it turns out I have a lot of thoughts on the subject and so I have decided to start this series of articles to explain some of them.
All the articles will be in this one thread and I will add them as they are ready. So what can you look forward to. Clicking on the bold text will take you to each article once they are posted.
Introduction: Why you may want to play strikerless and some of the ideas behind it.
Tactics: Playing with three attacking midfielders.
    Tactics: Shadow Striker Vs Trequartisata
    Defensive Strikerless.
The concept of playing FM without using a striker first came to my attention a few years ago through the work of a Dutch man called Guido Merry who has a website called Strikerless.com and is worth a look (after you have read this of course) although its sole focus is on the PC game. Much of my work is based around ideas that I have picked up from his work so I fell credit was due before I even begin. Despite strikerless being familiar to me for a few years I never really tried it on the PC game because of one reason, I love strikers! My two favourite England players over the years are Alan Shearer and Michael Owen and of course we have plenty of top strikers around at the moment such as Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski.
So what has changed? Nothing really I still love using strikers but its always fun to play around with different ideas and I perhaps have a little striker fatigue at the moment due to playing a lot of striker based goal scoring challenges recently. I did briefly and unsuccessfully try a strikerless tactic last year on FMM17 and also wrote my trail article for Vibe about it but the tactic and the article were both awful so they have never reached the light of day.
    What is strikerless?
This may sound a stupid question but I want to clarify something before we continue. In FMM we can play an inside forward in the right and left forward positions as we see here.

For the purposes of this article I am not calling this a strikerless formation as the IF’s are in the forward/striker strata of the pitch. It could be argued and has been that the IF is a midfield role but once you put him this far forward he will play more as a striker.
    Strikerless in real life
Football can be played in many ways and that is one of the reasons we all love it. We have seen a number of teams play without a recognised striker over the years including Scotland who tried to shut up shop against the Czech Republic in a 2010 World Cup qualifier. The aim of the then Scotland manager Craig Levein was to pack the midfield with numbers and try to stifle the more technically gifted Czech team. The fatal flaw in the plan was that despite creating the number Levein wanted in midfield Scotland lacked the players with the required skill and movement to harm the Czechs going forward and as a result putting in a turgid performance as they lost 1-0, that all but destroyed any hope they had of making the play-offs and Craig Levein received huge amounts of criticism for his negative thinking.
A much  more successful occasion that a team has played strikerless football is the Spain team which won the 2012 Euros. That Spanish side played with Fabregas listed as a striker on the team sheet but in reality he played as a false 9 and dropped deeper making a sixth man in midfield. This enabled Spain to play there possession Tiki Taka game as they dominated the midfield numbers and always had an extra man in that area. This style of football suited the squad that Vicente Del Bosque had at his disposal as it was similar to the Barcelona style of playing that was dominating domestic football at the time and seven players in the squad played for Barcelona including the highly influential Xavi and Ineista. His squad did contain strikers in the shape of Fernando Torres, Alvaro Negrado and Fernando Llorente and all except Llorente played some part in the tournament. Going into the tournament their where concerns over the form of Torres who was not enjoying a good time at Chelsea and also the ability of both Llorente and Negrado to get involved in the build-up play which is a must for the Spanish tiki taka style. The solution was to play Fabregas as a nominal striker when is actual fact he played a role somewhere between an attacking midfielder and a striker. This enabled the Spain team to play to their strengths and dominate in midfield with their constant passing and clever movement of players like Ineista and David Silva.

    Strikerless in FMM
The reason I choose to experiment with playing without a striker was because I struggle to get decent possession with my teams on FMM. It doesn’t matter how good my squad is and what trophies I win, more often than not I have less possession in match. Of course that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things but I like to dominate teams and I become frustrated by seeing us have less of the ball than the team I am playing.
Perhaps the strength of the squad you inherited at your new team is in the midfield area and you feel that a strikerless approach will enable you to bring out the best in the players you have especially at International level where the pool of players at your disposal are limited. This was part of Del Bosque’s thinking with his Spanish team. He had a pool of players which contained an abundance to top class midfielders whilst lacking in strikers who were in any kind of form or who suited the style of play he felt was best for the team.
When we manage top teams with powerful squads in FMM we often find that smaller teams will sit back and try to simply defend against us and it can become very frustrating to try and break them down. Can we get teams to push further up and create space by removing the striker and causing the opposition centre backs to instead have to worry about our attacking midfield as the goal threat. Or on the flip side of that can we use a strikerless tactic to try and frustrate opposition that are better than us just as Craig Levein tried to do with Scotland. These are all things I want to look at in this series.
So what do we need from our players if we want to play in this way? We need the basics for a start, so our attacking players that will provide the goal threat such as shadow strikers or trequartista’s need to be able to shoot otherwise how will they score but I believe there are some qualities that I need from all my midfield players in a strikerless tactic. This is young Benfica and Croatia midfielder Filip Krovinovic. I have been using him in my strikerless test save in a couple of different roles and he has developed well. I have highlighted some of the attributes that I would consider important if not vital for a midfielder to have if you are going to play strikerless football. These are universal attributes that I want to try and have in all my midfield players but of course you still require role specific attributes like shooting, tackling or crossing.

Technical attributes: I ideally want players who are comfortable on the ball and so I want them to have decent dribbling ability. They can use this to move in tight areas of the field and create space by going past a defender. They need to be able to find a teammate with their passes so passing is a must and technique ties in with that as it means they make less mistakes when attempting a pass or dribble. It also means they will have a good first touch so they don’t have to be thinking about controlling the ball but what they will do with it when they get it.
Mental attributes: Creativity and decisions are linked to passing in my mind. The player need to be able to see the killer pass and be able to make a quick decision which pass to make. Decisions also links with dribbling as a player needs to know when to run with the ball and when to pass it. To be able to find pockets of space on the pitch your player needs good movement as this will help in find good positions and get away from his marker. The better your players teamwork the better he will work with the other players in the team and also the harder he will work.
In this introduction to the series we have looked at some of the reasons why you may choose to play in this style and also some of the principles of playing this way. In the next article we will start to look at some actual tactics and in game situations.
I hope that you have enjoyed this introduction and that you will join me for the next instalment. I will update the thread title when I post the next article or you can follow the article by leaving a comment or hitting the follow button at the top right of this article.

I have found a handy website if you wish to pick a custom colour for your profile here on Vibe.
Go to your profile and click edit profile. You will see you have the option to pick a custom colour.
Open a new tab and go to https://htmlcolorcodes.com/ and use the sliders to pick the colour you want. Once you have chosen a colour you like highlight and then copy the number I have circled in black.
Then go back to your Vibe profile and paste that number into the custom colour box. I hope this has helped and that it will save some time if you have a specific colour that you would like but don't want to randomly type numbers in although it may already be common knowledge.

Foxy got a reaction from NucleusNT in Foxy Presents: The Teutonic Treble - Season Four
All three challenges are well under way now but I still want more from these lads. Arp broke the goal a game ratio last season but didn’t play enough games so only scored 55 goals so hopefully he can smash that total this season, Amiri also had a spell out injured last season which limited his games and assists but Goretzka in his GaM challenge took advantage of Arp missing some games to smash in 17 individually timed goals last year.
    Transfers
Only one departure of any note this season as I decided that I would let Oblak go this season as I am fed up with his constant demands for a new contract, I am in season four and I must have given him six new contracts in this save so far. That and he is starting to fall out with other players so time to say cheerio. I had to wait until January for him to go and I would have liked to get more for him than the £44m Arsenal paid but in the end I am happy to see the back of him.

I earmarked two players as a replacement for Oblak with the choices being either Jordan Pickford or Donnarumma. As Everton wanted about the same money for Pickford as AC Milan did for Donnarumma it was a no brainer to bring in the 21 year old Italian who will now all being well be my number 1 for the rest of this save. Eric Dier wanted out at Spurs and I was happy to offer him a home in Madrid as he is very versatile and comfortable in both midfield and defence. My final signing was I believe Messi’s regen for £4m. The plan is that he will play 2nd fiddle to both Arp up front and Amiri on the right until he gets fed up with that and then I will sell him for a huge profit!

    Competitions
We have yet to have a clean sweep of every trophy in this save so could this be the year?
    Euro Super Cup
First goal of the season for Arp and first trophy as well as we get a straight forward win over Chelsea.

    Spanish Super Cup
We took on Real Madrid in this one and I would love to tell you it was a closely fought final over two legs but to be honest it wasn’t as we ran out 6-1 winners.

    World Club Cup
This was my fourth time in this competition and so far I haven’t really taken advantage of playing these weaker sides by getting Arp hatful of goals. This year made up for that as Arp got a few. He started slowly enough with just the one against Cruz Azul of Mexico.

We had to play FC Hiroshima in the final and it is fair to say Arp enjoyed himself in this game as he bagged himself eight goals and only an offside flag denied him a triple hattrick.

    Copa Del Rey
We did the hard work early in this competition as we beat Barca and Real in the fifth and then quarter finals respectively. This meant we took on Valencia in the final who had been having a very good season. Some poor finishing from us kept the score respectable at 2-0 and trophy number four was in the cabinet.

    La Liga
Not going to lie the league was a piece of piss as we only dropped eight points the whole season. We scored a fairly (compared to previous seasons) healthy 97 goals but for the first time we conceded more than 21 goals as we let 25 in. Maybe I made a huge mistake bombing Oblak out the club!!!

    Champions League
Could we make it six trophies out of six? Well we didn’t make a very good start to the defence of our trophy!!!
We came back stronger in the knockout stage and made our fourth final in a row where we would take on the team we beat in last seasons final Juventus. Last year we needed a 90th minute winner to lift the trophy ao how about this year?

Yeah, not quite so tricky this year to complete our clean sweep.

    The Challenges
    Arp 1kc
You may have noticed that Arp did quite well in the finals this year with eight in the World Club Cup final and a hattrick in the Champions League final. So surely he had a good total this year?

A great season for him as he breaks the 200 goal barrier and even better is that he is getting fitter so he only missed five games this season with a small 10 day knock and I rested him in a couple of games when he was a little tired so that he could play against weaker teams. I have to say that is made easier when I have the reincarnation of Messi on the bench.

    Assists Challenge
Amiri is my man for this challenge and I was pleased that he remained fit for most of the season. He is now 24 and well into his prime so I am expecting good numbers from him now and he didn’t disappoint I don’t think.

A 30+ season for him and hopefully that is a sign of things to come over the next eight or nine seasons so that I can post a respectable score in this challenge. I plan to move Havertz from his left wing position next season into a CM position to see if he can up his numbers as he is being out assisted by both Diawara and Goretzka at the moment and I’m feeling sorry for the lad to be honest.

    Goretzka GaM
Last season Leon had a great season scoring 22 goals in total of which 17 were individually timed but then he was helped out by Arp missing games through injury. This year he didn’t have that and of course the more times he ticks off the list the more likely it is he will get duplicates. In the end he score 18 goals from his BBM role of which 12 were new times to tick off the list. This means he is now exactly half way through this challenge but he is 26 so the clock is ticking for him. Either way I’m really pleased with how this challenge is going so far as I never expected to have ticked off so many times at this stage of the save and although his goal scoring must have had an impact on the Arp 1kc that is well on track as well I think.

    Player stats
A really good season all round this year and so I need to keep this momentum going next season.

A really good season all round this year and so I need to keep this momentum going next season.

Tricky choice of players for this one and then the cards being deducted is just pure evil. Good work @Titjes and @NucleusNT.

That was why Arnautovic was my star as he won me a fair few games from the IF position and save me a few seconds each time he did.

I did a similiar thing and if he had scored by an hour in I would hook him off although I was the same as @chewkaiwen and found that Mattocks would score a couple in one game and then struggle in the next one. Arnautovic was the real star for me and it was his goals that helped my GD make up for a slow sprint time.
I'm always happy to see this graphic back as it's one of my favourites😀 Not sure what I have done to deserve 2nd favourite status tbf.

This I think although as it stands at the moment a score of 1 would see you into heat 2.
Get cracking then mate, plenty of time left to submit a score😉
