Chat Figuring value for money

Has anyone ever come up with a good calculation on what players give you the best value for money and which are just sucking up wage? I've been fiddling with a spreadsheet (see a snip below) where I multiply average rating by appearances and then divide by wage. It seems kind of arbitrary and I'm not sure it does much more than show who played a lot. I'd like to also to try to figure out whether someone is at the point I should sell them. I'm wondering if I should multiply by some variable for age or how much longer they are under contract.

Has anyone ever played with this kind of thing before and come up with a good equation?

Am I over-thinking this?

Player Name Appearances Avg Rating Wage Value Age Contract Expiry App*Rate/Wage Calc incl. value
Matias De Arrascaeta 35 6.51 1 27 22   227.85 254.85

Imo depends on how people play the game. Still hard to answer whether you should sell a season earlier or later. Ideally just after his prime, well, from a business point of view perhaps. But you still need to invest a chunk of those earnings in new talents. But why anyway? Early stages yes but at some point clubs have so much money to spend it makes no sense anymore to sell your star players as there are no better replacements in the market.

I never sell my players unless they don't have the quality to be part of my squad or if the club can't afford them/meet their demands.

Short answer, yes :D

Long answer, as the financial system in the game is absolutely bollocks, wage expenditure stops being an issue after a few seasons. Your wage budget just exponentially increases season after season.

However, if you wanna play hardcore and consider what is 'value for money', you probably would also like to consider the player's expected valuation over time. Typically, young players get more expensive, older players get cheaper. A player's value is also proportional to how many years they have left in their contract.

This seems like a simpler strategy to use, thanks!

Thanks for confirming that I'm over-thinking things. And that I'm not alone in thinking the wage budget is a bit ridiculous a few seasons in.
