Das ist Deutschland: The Trilogy Challenge

Simple concept here, three clubs, three challenges, three seasons. One final score!

Hamburg '79 - Mächtig Maus

In Kevin Keegan’s three seasons in the Bundesliga he managed to win the Ballon d’Or twice, play in the European Cup final against Nottingham Forest and release a top-10 smash hit

Keegan’s second season in Hamburg started with a 3-0 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach, at the time one of Europe’s best sides. Keegan missed a penalty but the win was an indicator of what was to come. Thrashings of defending champions Koln, as well as Hertha BSC, Schalke, Dortmund and Fortuna Düsseldorf would follow, and by the time HSV beat Bayern Munich 1-0 in December, their title credentials were clear.

In the New Year, Keegan cut loose. He was instrumental during the run-in, scoring 11 goals in the last 12 games of the season, combining wonderfully with Hrubesch and Magath. From 10 March to 9 June the team did not lose a match, almost three months undefeated. When they finally succumbed to Bayern in the final round of the season, HSV were already Bundesliga champions.

Keegan, who had been integral to the drive, had made himself a legend in Germany. He won the Ballon d’Or again that year and the HSV fans christened him Mächtig Maus (Mighty Mouse). The day of the Bayern defeat, his first single, Head Over Heels in Love, was released. Hamburg, it seemed, had fallen in love with Keegan, as it had with the young English musicians who had recorded their first single in the city all those years before.

Can you find a new Mächtig Maus?

We find Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. back down in 2. Bundesliga but still with a decent squad. Rick van Drongelen at the back, the experienced Lewis Holtby in Midfield and the wonderkid Jann-Fiete Arp up front. Can you find the right mix and formation to get the best from your Mächtig Maus? You have a decent €28m budget too.

Challenge Rules

1. Load up Germany and any other countries and take charge of Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V.
2. You must sign an English Advanced Playmaker/Striker to be your new Mächtig Maus. Other transfers are allowed.
3. The challenge will last just one season
4. Your score will be the total goals and assists scored by your Mächtig Maus plus league points and goal difference. 50 Bonus points for a league title.
5. Own formations only
6. No unlockables, edited databases, or use of any of the editors
7. Evidence is required, I'd suggest posting a career thread for us to follow.
8. No cheating - Restarting to avoid injuries counts as cheating.

Stuttgart 97' - Magisches Dreieck

They combined high effectiveness with great football art: In the Bundesliga season 1996/97 it was coined Fredi Bobic, Giovane Elber and Krassimir Balakov at VfB Stuttgart the concept of "magic triangle". The glorious three delighted fans and experts with their attacking play. In the attack Bobic and Elber whirled while Balakov created the magic. Although Bobic could not defend his title as top scorer from the previous season successfully. But with 78 goals that season, the Swabians recorded the best goal scoring in the league. Bobic (19) and Elber (17) scored almost half of all VfB goals.

To end it was not enough for Stuttgart, finishing only in fourth place, compensation brought for the third triumph in the DFB Cup. With 2: 0 VfB win in the final against the former regional league Energie Cottbus. Elber scored twice - it was his farewell present at the same time as he joining Bayern Munich for the following season, it was the end of the "magic triangle".

Can you create a new Magisches Dreieck?

Challenge Rules

Other transfers are allowed.
3. The challenge will last just one season.
4. Your score will be the total number of league goals and assists scored by your Magisches Dreieck plus league points and goal difference. 50 Bonus points for a league title.
5. Own formations only.

Wolfsburg '09 - Die Wölfe

Grafite-Wolfsburg-Bundesliga-title-2009.jpg.71ec976aa62d810a2d1f0708113cfcfa.jpg

When Wolfsburg won their first ever Bundesliga title in 2009, it surprised almost everyone. Most surprising of all was that their star striker that season was Grafite. Since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963, there have been few more unlikely champions than VfL Wolfsburg. Having first won promotion to the top flight in the late nineties, they have never been the Bundesliga’s most fashionable club, nor its most extravagant, nor successful. Prior to the 2008-09 season, the closest they had come to winning major silverware was when they finished as runners-up in the DFB-Pokal in 1995.

In his joint role as head coach and director of football, Felix Magath also brought in a spate of new players, most notably hard-working midfielder Christian Gentner, industrious holding player Josué, arch creator Zvjezdan Misimovic, and strikers Edin Džeko and Grafite.

Džeko and Grafite in particular proved to be among the canniest acquisitions in the history of German football, bought from Czech club Teplice and Le Mans of Ligue 1 for around €4m and €5.6m respectively.

While Džeko was an up-and-coming talent whose 26 league goals that season cemented his burgeoning reputation, Grafite’s goalscoring heroics were rather more unexpected. Having first earned professional terms in his early twenties, Grafite was coming up to 30 by the time he joined Wolfsburg. His most prolific season previously had been with São Paulo in 2004, when he had scored 22 goals in all competitions. Where Grafite’s 28 league goals that campaign came from, then, remains something of a beautiful mystery.

Can you find another dynamic duo to fire Die Wölfe to glory?

Other transfers are allowed.
