I’ve been needing a new challenge so I’ve decided to have a go at this one by @Kun Aguero 

Something different and gives me a chance to have a go in other leagues that I’m not used to, and the focus can be mainly on the team rather than trying to force one player to score a stupid amount of goals 😂

So basically I’ve to follow the Gengis Khan Mongolian invasion into Europe - in the challenge winning the leagues in China, Russia, Turkey/Poland, and then finally to Germany. All while taking a Chinese striker along for the ride around the various clubs  to supply the goals.

So the game is set up and I’ve loaded my leagues and time to choose a club, had to choose one of the four clubs in the Asian Champions League. I’ve decided to choose Beijing, not really any method but they had a green kit 😂

And now for the Chinese striker, I had a look at the squad and a 22 year old target man caught my eye.

Zhang Yuning 

Promising stats and could be decent with the right players around him. Maybe a couple of years older than I would have liked but there isn’t an overwhelming supply of wonderkids in China.

Stage 1 : Conquering China

The Mongolian invasion started at China, where they defeated the Song Empire, and founded the Yuan Empire, also the first Empire led by non-Han in China. Your version of Mongolian Invasion starts in China as well, find a commander for your upcoming invasion of Europe.

Aim : 

1. Start with a Chinese Super League Team

2. Sign or use a Chinese player already in the team 

3. Conquer China by winning the Chinese Super League title

4. Continue to conquer Asia by winning the AFC Champions League

5. Have your chosen player scoring 30 goals

Season 1

So I have my team (Beijing) and my player (Zhang Yuning) so my aim for this season is to win the league and the champions league with Zhang scoring 30 goals, and then I can get out of China and into Russia for Stage 2 of the challenge.

The squad looked decent overall, just extra quality needed in key areas so I brought in the following.

So with my squad ready, time to attack the season, first up was the Super Cup against SIPG and a chance to test the squad out against a strong team and see where we are at.

One of those crazy FMM games, but positive in Zhang scoring a hat trick and the first trophy. If we can keep scoring like that and tighten up at the back slightly it will be a good season.

Zhang started the season like a train, he was scoring every game he quickly got to 29 goals in about 19/20 games including 5 goals and a missed penalty in the first half an hour at Newcastle Jets.

He was stranded on 29 for about 5/6 games before finally nothing his 30th against Hebei.

So the 30 goals now done, just the league and champions league to win.

Well the league was fairly routine we had a healthy lead the whole way through and won it with 5 games to spare.

Having the big lead in the league allowed us to rotate where necessary to keep players fresh for the Champions League.

We passed through the group with no problems 4 wins and 2 draws. In the second round we lost away at Ulsan 2-0 in the first leg before in the 2nd leg...

Made it tough for ourselves but managed to get over the line. Next up was fellow Chinese side Shandong...

A more comfortable passage through, in the semi finals we had Jeonbuk, who we drew 2-2 against twice in the group stage...

 

The game was won in the first leg meaning that we had managed to get to the final and one win away from completing the first stage of the challenge.

 The team standing in our way was Al Hilal...

We dispatched the no problems, meaning the Chinese leg of the challenge was complete. The only thing left now was to play out the season, with the Chinese Cup and the World Club Championship still to play for.

SJZ of the second division were the opposition and we defeated them over two legs, making harder work of it than we should have.
So every trophy so far has been won, and now the Club World Championship to round off the season. One off games now so no room for slip ups, first up was Al Sadd...

Conceded an early goal but managed to come through in the second half. Now just the small task of Liverpool in the semi final...

Unfortunately Liverpool’s extra quality proved too much for us, but we gave it a good go and didn’t disgrace ourselves. Zhang managed to get himself sent off in injury time but the damage had already been done. We finished 3rd after beating Gremio in the 3rd place play off.

So the season now over and all objectives complete. Zhang finished on 50 goals and cleaned up all the awards. Next up try and find one of the top jobs in Russia. Unfortunately there is none currently available and there is a winter break until March, so patience may be the key here.

Stage 2 : Conquering Russia

The Mongolian Army then continue their invasion in Russia. All Russia's principalities were forced tosubmit to Mongol rule and became part of the Golden Horde empire, some of which lasted until 1480. Mongolian's invasion in Russia also lead to the separation of Russia into three separatenations, modern-day Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. In this stage of the challenge, you will have to bring your commander to the Russian Super League, and continue your version of European Invasion. Find a Russian player to accompany your commander in your invasion in Russia as well.

Season 2

So I started the season in China In February while keeping an eye out for jobs, I had a couple of offers from Germany and Turkey, but nothing from Russia.

Managed to win the Super Cup again and made some more signings for the team.

And then a couple more games into the season I see a position become insecure at CSKA.

Then one thing leads to another and here I am at CSKA, for the final 11 games of the Russian season.

That’s the table after my first game, I forgot to screenshot before it. They were somehow sat in 7th place and the squad was horrific, small and unbalanced! 

First thing I had to do was agree a deal with Zhang for when the window opened.

And now to concentrate on the team, I used the same tactics I had at Beijing, although we didn’t have the ideal players for it across a few positions. First game was a 3-0 win away at Sochi, before we went on to lose 3 games in a row.

I had to go back to basics, and change to defensive with 2 DMs to try and finish off the season strongly. We actually managed to go unbeaten the final 7 games without conceding so it must have worked. Fixtures below, the 3-0 at Sochi being my first game.

That final run took us into 6th place, only 1 point off 4th, enough to give us the final Europa League spot. And I somehow won the Russian manager of the year

I don’t know how either 😂

So a season of transition over and time to plan for the following season. There wasn’t any standout Russian player in the squad that I could see for my 30 assists, so some major business to do in the summer transfer window to build a squad that can challenge for the title, and also to find a Russian capable of providing the assists for Zhang.

Season 2

So here we are at the start of the Russian second season. Big overhaul needed and unfortunately only £1m to spend, so I had to sell one of my assets to raise funds. Oblyakov to Arsenal for £45m.

I identified the man to provide my 30 assists who was Anton Zin’kovskiy.

Transfer listed by Krylja Sovetov and a bargain at £900k. Not a world beater by any means, but promising attributes for a winger where most assists seem to come from in my system. Slim pickings of what is available in the market and on my budget, but hopefully he can do the business!

And here is the main man himself, already identified as one of my star players

A bit more wheeling and dealing and more quality/depth in key areas and the squad was ready for the season. Spearheaded by Zin & Zhang ☯️

Plenty of games early on in the season with the season starting early and the Europa League qualifiers. A couple of notable games:

After a good start to the season, we reached the winter break still in all competitions. Topped a kind Europa League group and top of the league, although Zenit were close behind and we only managed to go above them a game or two before the break.

So all looking good on the team front but how were the guys getting on? Well Zhang had racked up 28 in 32 which I was happy with, and Zin had reached 11 assists in 25 games. Not as impressive, but it’s looking like it would need 2 seasons in Russia rather than just 1.

More awards for Zhang as he was runner up to Son in Asian player of the year and won the Russian player of the year.

When the season started again, Zin was flying with 9 assists in 9 games and more goals for Zhang, until disaster...

Zin ruled out for 2 months and looking like he would miss the season while being stuck on 20 assists. Meaning another season in Russia was inevitable.

We made more progress in cup competitions but unfortunately came up short against Tottenham in Europe and Krasnodar in the Cup.

But quarter finals of the Europa League isn’t bad for the ‘6th best’ team in Russia I suppose. The cup was a bit more frustrating. Neither have a bearing on the challenge though at least!

In the league it was much better though and we finished strongly meaning we won the league with 4 games to spare.

Zin came back for the last game of the season and manager to nick a goal but no assists. So at the end of the season here’s how we looked:

43 goals for Zhang and 20 assists for Zin, with both guys cleaning up the awards. And a manager of the year for myself.

So just 7 goals and 10 assists needed in the new season, with the early start hopefully we can box it off quickly then get to Turkey before the transfer window shuts! But that would be very much an outside chance.

Season 3

So back at the start of another season for CSKA, and just the 10 assists for Zin and the 7 goals for Zhang needed.

A 4 goal haul brought up Zhang’s 50 for the club, against my nemesis Krasnodar in what feels like my only win against them. They knocked me out of the Cup in both seasons and beat me in the super cup at the start of this season and also in the league.

Only 6 games into the season and half the task was complete, just the assists to go now. This was somewhat more frustrating. Despite good performances and plenty of goals the assists just wouldn’t seem to come.

At the halfway stage of the season before the winter break Zin had managed 7 assists. Zhang has continued to rack up the awards, but it looked like I would have to see the season out.

I signed a target man in January with aerial 18 to try and help get over the line with the assists from corners and it seemed to do the trick. He managed the final 3 assists in the 7 games after the season resumed.

A somewhat frustrating season, although I can’t fault the performances and ratings of the players. But achieving my targets meant I could now keep an eye on the jobs available in Turkey. We progressed through the Champions League group before getting knocked out by Zebre, and managed to win another league title. Although it was a lot closer this time as I seemed to be chasing assists.

Overall numbers were 33 for Zin and 64 for Zhang. Not many jobs seemed to be coming up until just after the last game a poor season for Beşiktaş and a 6th place finish for them meant that there was a vacancy.

First job of course was to bring in the main man.

On first glance the squad looked a lot better than the CSKA one when I arrived, so hopeful of a big first season in Turkey

Stage 3 : Conquering Poland & Turkey

 

 

Batu's army than continued their invasion in Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Turkey. But since only the Poland and Turkey league is in the game, you will have to choose either one to be your next destination.

Aim :

1. Join a LOTTO Ekstraklasa or SuperLig team.

2. Sign the Chinese player

3. Sign or use a Polish/Turkish player already in the team

4. Win the league

5. Complete your first stage of European invasion by winning the UEFA Europa League

It’s a new one for me too but seems to be going okay so far! I don’t have the patience for a a 1KC but moving around is keeping me interested. Think this is my first save on FMM20 where I’ve changed jobs 😂

Season 4

First season at Beşiktaş, and we had no European competition. Meant we could concentrate on the league, but restricted the number of games we had to rack up the goals/assists.

With Zhang Yuning already signed on it was time to recruit an assister. After an optimistic bid for Cengiz Under failed I ended up signing Yunus Akgün from Galatasaray for £7.75m. Another winger with decent attributes, and at only 22 will surely be able to improve.

With the players signed up and a few more transfers it was time to start the season. We started the season well, and at the halfway stage before the break for the Qatar WC we were sitting at the top of the table with Galatasaray close behind. 7 assists and 17 goals for my duo.

No shocks in the World Cup and it was won by Germany, China had qualified but lost all 3 group games. All the top international jobs became available but Li Tie did enough to keep his job at China so that bonus challenge would have to wait for now.

Yet more recognition for Zhang

And just when the League is about to start back up again in January, it’s the Asian Nations Cup, meaning Zhang will miss a few games.

We managed to get by without him, although we did get knocked out of the cup by Basaksehir in the quarter final on away goals.

We went on to win the league on the last game of the season, meaning Champions League qualification.

29 goals for Zhang in 31 games, and 20 assists in 38 games for Yunus.

More awards too

Overall a good season, but we were very much hampered by lack of games and Zhang missing a good chunk of the season for internationals. 

Hopefully next season they can play 50-60 games and manage to reach their targets. 41 goals and 30 assists needed, along with the Europa League.

Season 5

Halfway through the job in Turkey, and positivity after a decent first season. A bit more quality added to the squad and hopefully we could have a good crack at the Europa League and get enough goals and assists to complete the challenge this season.

First problem was being in the Champions League, so I had to find a way into the Europa League.

At the half way stage things we’re looking promising, top of the league, a Super Cup in the bag and still in the Turkish Cup. Most importantly though into the Europa League knockout stages.

The guys had a decent first half of the season, and Zhang looked on course to hit his target of 41 goals, but Yunus looked to have slowed down and like he would need a big second half of the season.

We ended up coming 2nd in the league, mainly due to the fixture congestion fighting on all fronts, and prioritising players being fully fit for the Europa League. Still a decent season and saves me having to get knocked out of the Champions League next season

Cup

We fared better in the Cup, getting all the way to the final, a 6-0 away win against Trabzonspor in the semi being a highlight. We went on to beat rivals Galatasaray on penalties after an uneventful game

Europe

This was the main event though, and the most important and toughest competition. In the first knockout round we had a kind draw against Red Star Belgrade.

After a 2-2 draw away in the first leg, we were too strong at home in the second.

Next up was Ajax in the quarters.

3-0 win in the first leg took the pressure off for the 2nd leg and we sailed through comfortably into the semi finals. 

Standing in the way would be Tottenham and Harry Kane who knocked me out of the Champions League and proved way too strong for my CSKA side.

Another 3-0 win in the home leg in a tight game took the pressure off the 2nd meaning we just needed to avoid a heavy defeat to make the final. A 0-0 draw seeing us through to set up a final against...

My old club CSKA! We’ve got a stronger side than them, but could they come back to haunt me in the biggest game of my career so far?

Preparations weren’t ideal as we lost our main playmaker for 7 months in training on the day of the final.

So here we go, could we win the trophy? We probably won’t get a better chance.

Yes we could! And Oktay’s replacement Azubuike managed to score in the first minute of the game. A second goal after 4 minutes made for a comfortable game. Until the final 5 minutes after they pulled one back. Trophy coming to Istanbul though and another part of the task complete. Time to see how the guys did with their returns and could it be time to head to Germany?

Zhang managed to bring up his 70th and 71st goals for the club in the semi final against Tottenham, so his goals were complete. Finishing the season on 47 goals and 76 in total.

 

Not so much look for Yunus, and with 30 assists needed it was a big ask to hit them all. He finished up on 15. 5 less than the previous season, meaning another season at Beşiktaş to complete his assists before we can look to Germany.

Season 6

Started the season at Beşiktaş, just needing the 15 assists for Yunus then I could be out of Turkey and looking for a job in Germany. 

Part 1

I was offered the France job after the Euros, my first international job offer of the save. I took it to hopefully increase my reputation. But the ideal international job is still unavailable at China!

More importantly though, Yunus started the season in fine form. A tweak to the tactics and an injury to Zhang allowed me to play Kleindeist which helped the assists From set pieces.

He actually beat last seasons total in half the games, an impressive return. Meant more awards for the team.

But more importantly having hit the assists in January, it meant we could start looking for another job and hopefully being able to take Zhang to Germany in the transfer window to give him an extra half a season there at his peak.

Part 2

Welcome to Germany

So there was just one available job in Germany which was at Stuttgart. They were sitting 3rd bottom in the relegation play off place, but I applied and ended up getting the job on the 30th January, leaving me just 2 days to bring in pretty much a full team.

First things first the main man had to come in.

He had just turned 28 this month so would need to hit the ground running and start scoring some of his 150 before his stats start to deteriorate.

Now we needed an Austrian assister, luckily we already had a young Wolf in the ranks.

Good physical and mental stats, so hopefully he can be trained up a bit technically to improve his crossing. I plan to use him as a left winger. No goals or assists in his 5 appearances so far so could be a tough ask! But again as in Russia and Turkey, top players are hard to come by!

Overall the squad looked poor and I had to make a number of signings in defence and midfield, and also 2 goalkeepers.

The caretaker won his game in charge meaning we were in 14th place when I took over and still in the DFB Pokal. So hopefully a strong second half of the season, a few goals and assists for Zhang and Wolf, and then rebuild properly in the summer for a team capable of challenging at the top end of the table.

Matches

First game couldn’t have gone any better with a 3-0 away at Darmstadt and a goal for Zhang on debut.

After beating Leverkusen and a draw against Hoffenheim, we then had a double header against Bayern, a cup match followed by a league game.

A win on penalties in the cup followed by a 1-0 win in Munich left us in the semi finals of the Cup and feeling confident for the challenge ahead.

Unfortunately though there was an injury on international duty

Zhang’s season over, after only 6 appearances and 3 goals.

We continued our strong form in the league, and then had our DFB Pokal semi final against Gladbach.

3-0 win and a hat trick from our winger playing up front due to injuries, and we would now have a chance of silverware at the end of the season.

A couple of defeats and a draw after the semi final before ending the season with a win at Schalke saw us finish in 8th position, narrowly missing out on a European spot.

All eyes now on the Olympiastadion, for our DFB Pokal final against the league champions, Dortmund.

A great win for the team, and a trophy in the cabinet. European football next season and after beating some of the top teams in the league, I’m confident we can challenge next season with a few more quality signings.

3 in 6 for Zhang in a season cut short by injury, only 147 to go!

8 assists racked up for Wolf in the 19 games since I came in, a decent ratio and will hopefully get better when he becomes fully green on LW and improves his crossing.

A place in team of the year for Wolf and runner up in manager of the year for me.

Overall it’s been a good start in Germany and let’s see what next season brings.

Tactics

My tactic is usually something like this but I’m always tweaking it. Depending on form, injuries, opposition etc.

Sometimes I change my midfielders and have a playmaker instead or box to box. 

One up front I usually stick with advanced forward, if I’m chasing a game and have two up top it’s usually a target man and poacher.

I don’t change my back 4, and prefer wingers although sometimes I use inside forwards.

I prefer control, especially if I’m a better side but sometimes counter is useful if you’re a lesser side.

With transfers, I tend to just look for players which suit my system.

Striker strong, good finishing and good in the air.

Wingers good dribbling, crossing and speed.

Midfield high teamwork, tackling, stamina.

Playmaker high passing and creativity.

Defenders tackling, heading, positioning.

Wingbacks tackling/crossing.

Stage 4 : The End Of Mongolian Invasion

 

The Mongolian army then invaded Vienna of Austria, but the Austrian knights managed to defeat the Mongolian army. After the failed initial raids, the rest of the Mongols retired back into Russia after learning of the Great Khan Ögedei's death. Since Austrian league is not in the game, you will be going to the nearest country from Vienna, which is Germany.

Aim :

1. Join a Bundesliga team

2. Sign the Chinese player

4. Sign or use a Austrian player already in the team

5. Win the Bundesliga title

6. Complete your European invasion by winning the Champions League.

7. Have your Chinese player scoring 150 goals

Season 7

Competitions

Only 2 that matter are the Bundesliga and  Champions League. But we aren’t in the CL this season and might come too early to challenge for the title. But attention would be focussed on the league, while needing to progress in other competitions for more games to hit goals and assists.

Started the season with a win and managed to keep our form going until the winter break including a good win away at Bayern.

Sitting top at Christmas but only just ahead of Dortmund. Defence looking good, but not scoring as many as I would like.

An interesting draw with very/early late goals against Dortmund in the first game back after the break meant the gap remained 3 points.

Another couple of key results against top teams in the league, kept us in contention. And exiting the cup competitions allowed us to focus on the league for the run in.

6 games to go and we were level on points and goal difference with all to play for. It looked like a two horse race but Schalke and Bayern would be ready to pounce on any mistakes.

Defeat against Hoffenheim meant that it would all go down to a nervy final game against Dortmund of all teams! Winner takes all clash, although draw suits us and it was at home.

Flying straight out the traps we raced into a half time 4-0 lead, and then saw the game out in the 2nd half. The title would be coming back to Stuttgart!

League title secured, and Champions League football next season.

Zhang hit 29 goals and looked like he might be slowing down, he turned 29 this season. Still 118 needed to reach his 150 target.

Wolf however was just finding his feet, after becoming natural as a left winger he became a key part of the team weighing in with 25 assists. 67 more needed for him.

Just the CL and more goals/assists needed. Managed to win the league and improve the squad further with more younger players. Lost the Super Cup and was knocked out the DFB Pokal early on.

Came through a potentially tricky group, next up was Real Madrid.

Fantastic first leg, 3 goals scored and no away goals conceded. Surely enough of a lead to see us through.

Wrong! Absolute disaster of a second leg and probably the most frustrating game of the save, nearly launched the phone across the room 😂 and to top it off Samassekou was one of my players from Besiktas.

Oh well, try again next season!

In other news, they rebuilt the stadium and gave me the chance to rename it. Zhang Yuning Stadium now, opening up for the next season.

Same targets as last 2 seasons, still need more goals, assists and the CL.

Won everything domestically, league, cup and super cup.

51 goals for Zhang needed, 18 assists for Wolf and still needing the elusive CL.

Europe

Topped the group, setting up a game against Chelsea.

Managed to progress on penalties. Next up Man City.

A big win in the first leg was enough to help us through. Into the semi final, and standing in the way was more English opposition.

Won the home leg 2-0 before losing by he same score away meaning penalties. We started off well before missing 4 in a row and losing out 3-2 after sudden death 🤮

Another 35 to the tally, just 16 more to go. A good total, and it looks like he might have hit 150 if it wasn’t for the games missed in season 1 and 3.

Wolf

Wolf managed to the 18 he needed at the end of January, meaning I could finally take him off corners for someone better!

Finished the season on 22, taking him to 104 in total, and this part of the challenge complete.

Season 11

Just the CL needed and 16 goals for Zhang.

Zhang

With 16 needed to get his 150, he actually managed to score 4 against Schalke while he was on 15.

He finished the season on 21, so 155 in total for the club.

Europe

Absolute stinker of a group with Liverpool and Real Madrid

Managed to scrape through. Next up Chelsea.

Too strong and into the quarters to play Valencia.

Comfortable win in what was a kind draw. Into the semis against Man City  in a tougher game.

0-0 in the away leg, but no away goals, would that come back to haunt us or could we see the job through at home?

No problems in Germany and a 3-0 win takes us into our first final to play Liverpool who beat us and drew with us in the group stage.

After being the better side and looking like it was going to be heading to ET and pens, my playmaker scored a free kick in 76th minute for a 1-0 win. Finally the CL would be coming home!

So challenge finally complete! It got frustrating towards the end but finally did it. Unfortunately China job still not available so bonus stage looking unlikely. I’ve resigned from Stuttgart and headed to Shanghai Shenhua in China, in the hope of improving academys to try and give me a chance of winning World Cup with China, but probably end up not playing this save for a while!
