Well, we can't all be Arthur or Rodrygo. We did get the occasional lesser lights shipped over as well as the great ones...

Don't act like there's none left over there though. There's some on this here forum who are struggling, repeatedly, with the concept of top seeds automatically qualifying for the second round for example. No names, right @Woody? 😂

To be fair though, I too have 'parked' my (high powered rear wheeled) car in the bushes after pushing the limits a little too far in the wet. If you haven't done that once in your life, you haven't lived!

😂 keep me out of this 😂

I'm only in October! Spent a long long time trying to find good free agents who'd join, so started playing later than most. Also, don't have that much game time... 🙁

Update - The World Cup (Season 9)

Slightly overdue, but as promised, here's what happened in the World Cup.

We won the Euros 2 years ago, but could we win the World Cup? My instinct told me no, because: a) the team is not as strong as Italy really should be; and b) I've had so much trouble winning the Champions League, making me think knockout tournaments are harder to win this year.

The Group Stage

We had games against Australia, Algeria and Germany, and they all went smoothly:

Spoiler

pinamonti-season09-30.jpg.457ff71827068077f6643c072dfba3a2.jpg

The Second Round

Moving into the second round, we were given the tough challenge of facing France. They are definitely stronger than Italy at this point and so it proved as they dominated us. To make matters worse we had a player sent off in the 9th minute. Was it time for us to go home?

pinamonti-season09-31.jpg.e927a0461b537e3cf9f6e075100cee52.jpg

No! Despite their dominance, they couldn't score. Our old pal Pinamonti could though, and his goal was enough to send us through to the next round.

The Quarter Final

Alright... With France despatched, the next challenge we were given was Argentina. A big name and considered by some as favourites, but we were too strong for them. We dominated, Pinamonti scored 2 goals and we proceeded to the semi finals.

pinamonti-season09-32.jpg.44c5b77d44f656e971e6788c842c6295.jpg

The Semi Final

Alright, we made it through France and Argentina. Who's next? Spain, that's who! Another team that's stronger than us. Still, if you want to win the World Cup, you're going to have to beat some strong teams. Bring it on!

Well, what a match:

pinamonti-season09-33.jpg.91e9c1502226839434a610e67fc4eb7c.jpg

Spain took the lead early with Newcastle sub Barbero scoring. D'Amico (former Newcastle player, re-signed mid-tournament) got us back on level footing. Then two disallowed goals, before Pinamonti put us ahead.

"We're through to the final" I thought. Nope. Barbero scored again in stoppage time, forcing us into overtime.

Pinamonto scored, putting us back in front and we held on for grim life. My nerves were shot by this stage, but I needn't have worried, because Pinamonti settled it by scoring in the final minute of the game. Whew, on to the Final.

The Final

Who do we face in the Final? England!

pinamonti-season09-34.jpg.0f09408e19ceb2ef40b6e61179969e91.jpg

We're slight favourites. Of course their greatest threat is an ex-Newcastle player, Timmy Abraham:

pinamonti-season09-35.jpg.c14b3fe19b4781178ade5e6551954818.jpg

Wasn't quite good enough to stay with Newcastle, but more than capable of hurting us, especially with the "scores against ex-Manager" bonus he'll receive. Fortunately Gareth Southgate left him on the bench:

pinamonti-season09-36.jpg.eb2ccc5b8f200baded0764cb0f619a03.jpg

There are other familiar faces: Newcastle defender Gomez is in the starting eleven, along with ex-Newcastle player Vieira, while on the bench we have Gribben and Davies joining Abraham.

On to the game:

We go 2-0 up early on. "We've got this!" I think. England get one back and I start to sweat... But they almost immediately go down to 10 men. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well, it's not hurting them, they are matching us in terms of possessions and shots...

As the game draws to a close, we shut up shop and hope to hang on for the win. No!! Dele Alli scores in the 86th minute... It's 2-2 and only a few minutes to play. We're looking at extra time...

Wait!! A penalty!! For us!! In the 91st minute! Pinamonti steps up. He can win the WorldCup for Italy!

Missed! He does a Baggio! We're going to extra time, but I'm a broken man by this point... I'm not sure I can face what's next... Sure enough, extra time is tense, it's tight, both teams having chances to win... And...

Spoiler

Pinamonti scores in the 113th minute, redeeming that penalty miss. We lock up shop and keep it locked up this time. England run out of time and steam and chances.

pinamonti-season09-37.jpg.893f0e7ff89b0f155d6302b28dbadaaa.jpg

Italy wins the World Cup! I should be excited, but I try to stay calm as I dial the emergency number and ask for an ambulance. I'll appreciate this win in a day or so, if I make it through...

Of course the Aussie would beat England in the final🙁

Good to see you recognise this is inevitable! 😄

Actually England's my second team. I've followed them in so many tournaments, ever since France 98, when I was living in England and got caught up in the madness... I had a soft spot for them before that too, given I followed the Premier League. I'd always go for Australia in a straight up match between them, but against anyone else, I'm an England fan.

Confession: I taught my 7 year daughter Three Lions during this last World Cup. I played it on guitar and she sang it!

Update - Season 10

Once again, we were aiming for a) 100+ goals (club and country) for Pinamonti and b) the Champions League. Once again, we achieved one, but missed the other.

Transfers

I still have way too many players and while I got rid of some, I couldn't help myself - I brought some new players in too.

Spoiler

pinamonti-season10-21.jpg.88dd8e3add5532fd4fab36ae11676d1d.jpg

Leaving us were:

  • Amiri: I've been threatening this for years now. He's a very good player, but I just can't get the best out of him. He's not first choice, or second choice, and he's not getting any younger. There's the door!

  • Monek: I only bought him a season or two ago. He's very good and tends to provide more assists than goals, but he is out injured almost all the time. I needed to trim the squad and he was expendable.

  • Roos: An excellent wide midfielder (maybe Robben's regen?) who was doing reasonably well, but he was a) 30 years old so not a long term option; and b) bait I could use in buying another wide midfielder.

  • Gribben: He developed into a top top player in this save. The only problem is I had lots of top top top players and eventually I couldn't fit him in.

Coming in were:

  • D'Amico: A former player, that I re-signed after he provided some good assists for Pinamonti at ITN level. I shouldn't have let him go originally, as he developed into a top class player, but live and learn hey?

  • Pulisic: Yet another wide player. Sell two, buy two... But he was on a free, right? What was I supposed to do? And spoiler, even though I expected I'd have to sell him in a year's time, he actually did well. Fancy that!

  • De Rossi: A young Italian right midfielder, with retraining potential for the right wing, right back and central midfield. Yes, I bought him purely so I could retrain him for the ITN team.

Competitions

Here's how we did in the various competitions this seasons:

  • Won the Community Shield, beating Man Utd 3-0.

  • Won the League Cup, beating Man Utd 3-1 in the final.

  • Won the FA Cup, beating Everton 4-0 in the final, with two goals from Pinamonti.

  • Won the Premier League again, but not as convincingly as I'd like. We were in a neck to next race with Man Utd most of the way - it wasn't until March that we pulled clear of them. And 100 goals is not good enough.

  • Won the Champions League for the third time, beating Real Madrid 2-1 in the final, with both goals coming from Pinamonti.

  • And Italy won the International League, beating Holland 2-1 in the Final, with both goals coming from Pinamonti, including the 89th minute winner.

pinamonti-season10-27.jpg.55335487e78a3466a4c0c4d07e6a847a.jpg

We won everything this year, but weren't convincing all the time. This may related to the fact that I don't pay attention so closely when Pinamonti's not playing. Like the time I played the reserve goalie at left back...

Assists

Who is providing all the (club) goals?

pinamonti-season10-22.jpg.6a0fc5c4041a757a1f2d4ffabb7439d8.jpg

I've come to accept that we won't have one player who gets 30 or 40 assists. Instead we'll share them around. This season we even shared the corners around instead of one player taking them. Some notes:

  • I was really happy that Menezes Jacomo finally stood up. He is the Kaka regen and has done wonders for me in other 1KCs, but has been a disaster this time around.

  • Pulisic proved to be a good signing. His assist rate slowed right down towards the end, but he claimed the right wing position as his. Just as well, because...

  • Coman was terrible! 12 goals and only 6 assists from 28 games, when you're on corner duty some of the time? Socks. Up! I'll swap you from Amiri at this rate...

  • Havertz reverted to form, with more goals than assists (he looked better last year).

Injuries

Pinamonti picked up a 10 day injury late in the season:

pinamonti-season10-14.jpg.311b588010f3e88c54b41cc9f369cfb7.jpg

It knocked him down to 38% condition, meaning he was actually out for almost 3 weeks.

Development

This is what Pinamonti looks like now (no change):

pinamonti-season10-23.jpg.1a32b809b176ebba07e5a6e535af590c.jpg

Goals - Highlights

Pinamonti only had the one quadruple this season:

Spoiler

pinamonti-season10-10.jpg.8ed7ddcaf65a9abd381f131654c15615.jpg

He's still scoring regularly, but the big scores are drying up. 🙁

Goals - Club

He scored 75 goals in 49 games:

pinamonti-season10-24.jpg.16c597e9942357c7965b405688e9e72f.jpg

Not quite as good this year. Might have been slightly more respectable if not for the injury, but he was behind his average rate all year. Still a good job, just not as good as he's been.

Goals - ITN

Pinamonti had 118 international goals at the start of the year:

pinamonti-season09-38.jpg.fbd2608fca98ce7f64c2218c02dab0c5.jpg

And he finished with 127, meaning he'd scored 9 goals in 10 games.

pinamonti-season10-28.jpg.227ef4a29f2b1bf57c6cc65166191ee8.jpg

That's much slower than previously. We did have less games and they were mostly International League games, which serves up stronger opposition than most, but still...

Progress

28 years old (EOY) Season Total
Club Goals 75 683
ITN Goals   9   94
Totals 84 777

After getting used to 100+ totals, 84 is disappointing, injury or no injury. 😢

The Future

This year we swapped which target we met. Pinamonti fell short of the 100+ goal target, but we won the Champions' league one. Next year we want both! I'm running out of excuses...

Thanks mate! Yeah, I'm counting on him to get to 1.5K. Of course he'll probably end on 1,494 goals (Colidio finished on 1,493 for me last year). I'm gonna push him till he gets there though...

Thanks mate! With the Italy job, I just waited and eventually Ancelotti retired. He can't last forever, so hopefully he retires for you! Gotta watch it carefully though as I didn't get a notification, I just get in the habit of checking the jobs screen and one day, there it was,

And yeah, Italy do have some class strikers this year! :)

Well to be fair, that list has the regens for Kaka, Ronaldo and Pirlo in it. And I suspect some of the others must be regens of top players too.

Update - Season 10a - Calendar Year

Well, everyone else seems to be doing this (at least @Nucleus and @Titjes are), so I may as well do it with Pinamonti - I'm talking about the The Calendar Year Scoring Challenge.

Club Goals

Pinamonti starts the year with 34 club goals:

pinamonti-season10a-01.jpg.1aeee47f7bdfb09b5d300eeffb1c9fce.jpg

Then gets another 41 in the first half of the year (75-34), followed by 47 in the second half of the year:

pinamonti-season10a-03.jpg.9b2ad1764c4d1f700dbaee630f8603a7.jpg

So a total of 88 club goals.

ITN Goals

Not many games this year, so not many goals. He starts with 121 goals:

pinamonti-season10a-02.jpg.e6ee1b389c389558709f990449fac73e.jpg

And finishes the year with 134 goals:

pinamonti-season10a-04.jpg.fe36ce3ea8b2a17f57d0717cb8bf8382.jpg

A total of 13 ITN goals this year.

Total For The Year

Club Goals   88
ITN Goals   13
TOTAL: 101

Not a bad start. He's had some seasons where he would have topped this, but it will be enough to earn him a place on the leaderboard. But of course, he's going to beat this score next year!

Well, everyone else seems to be doing this (at least @Nucleus and @Titjes are), so I may as well do it with Pinamonti - I'm talking about the The Calendar Year Scoring Challenge.

Club Goals

Pinamonti starts the year with 34 club goals:

pinamonti-season10a-01.jpg.1aeee47f7bdfb09b5d300eeffb1c9fce.jpg

Then gets another 41 in the first half of the year (75-34), followed by 47 in the second half of the year:

pinamonti-season10a-03.jpg.9b2ad1764c4d1f700dbaee630f8603a7.jpg

So a total of 88 club goals.

ITN Goals

Not many games this year, so not many goals. He starts with 121 goals:

pinamonti-season10a-02.jpg.e6ee1b389c389558709f990449fac73e.jpg

And finishes the year with 134 goals:

pinamonti-season10a-04.jpg.fe36ce3ea8b2a17f57d0717cb8bf8382.jpg

A total of 13 ITN goals this year.

Total For The Year

Club Goals   88
ITN Goals   13
TOTAL: 101

Not a bad start. He's had some seasons where he would have topped this, but it will be enough to earn him a place on the leaderboard. But of course, he's going to beat this score next year!

Nice start to the calendar year mate, and on an off form season, things can only get better 😉

Thanks mate! He's 29 at the end of the current season though, so I hope I haven't left this too late! Still, it's just a little bonus so no biggie if that's the max.

Jumping on the bandwagon eh! I get it 😂

You sir, have the advantage of international management and I curse you and your Italian striker to the depths of hell 😝

Hehe, it was you saying "if only I had international management" that made me say "hang on a minute!" :D

Update - Season 11

As always, we're shooting for a) 100+ goals (club and country) for Pinamonti and b) the Champions League. Did we get them both this year?

Transfers

Less transfers than normal, perhaps I'm learning my lesson?

Spoiler

pinamonti-season11-27.jpg.5472c25e6c307d16fd5540932e08dd18.jpg

Leaving us were:

  • Coman: Last season he got 6 assists from 28 games. Not a youngster anymore and no reason to persist with him.

  • Joe Gomez: A top class centre back and quite versatile too, but not young any more and it struck me that with so much money in the bank, I could probably get an upgrade on him.

Coming in were:

  • Schurrle: A defender that looks top class. Not as good at passing and dribbling as Gomez, whom he replaces, but better defensively and younger with hopefully some development left in him.

  • Gisinti: Another young centre back. He'll just be a backup, but I can develop him for the Italian team and he'll likely be good enough to start there.

But WTF is this, Mike Ashley? The first time he's butted in in 11 years, so I guess I should thank my lucky stars, but still...

He better not sell Pinamonti out from under me. That would be such a Mike Ashley thing to do...

Competitions

Here's how we did in the various competitions this seasons:

  • Won the Community Shield, beating Man Utd 2-0, both goals from Pinamonti.

  • Won the European Super League, 2-1 over Dortmund.

  • Won the Club World Championship 3-0, beating SEP 3-0 in the final, with one goal from Pinamonti.

  • Won the League Cup, beating Liverpool 3-1 in the final.

  • Won the FA Cup, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the final, with one goal from Pinamonti. We had a scare against Man Utd in the 6th round though, needing a 92nd minute equalizer to get us into extra time, where we grabbed the winner.

  • Won the Premier League again, but still only 107 goals. @Nucleus is scoring 162 league goals in his save!

  • Won the Champions League for the fourth time (and first time retaining it), beating Barcelona 4-3 in a thriller! We were 3-0 down after 60 minutes, but came back, with two goals in extra time (of normal time) to send us into overtime where we grabbed the winner... Excitement, what!?

  • And Italy won Euro 2028, beating Wales 1-0 in the Final (sorry @Nucleus  @Taff). We should have won comfortably, but we made hard work of it. We didn't score the winner until the 88th minute and we finished the game with only 9 players, with Bonucci and Pinamonti being sent off. That's not what I meant when I said I wanted to see your name on the scoreboard Andrea!

Yep, we won everything again (about time we did this consistently):

Bad Times Ahead

Ten years of service were up, so I was offered a place on the board:

pinamonti-season11-12.jpg.445ce4942e373a3457b5132d27ef08a3.jpg

Great! Now I can slowly take us down through the leagues, so Pinamonti can score 300 goals per season in the Conference! Actually that will probably suit Mike Ashley just fine... Better not do it, can't give him the satisfaction.

Assists

Who is providing all the club goals?

pinamonti-season11-28.jpg.287a9594fc125c595b7dc9863b1c6b6f.jpg

Goebel, a nice young Brazilian left winger, is looking like he might take the lead from here on in. Apart from him, we have a bunch of others chipping in. Pulisic and Jacomo once looked like they'd be the leaders, but not so prolific this year.

Injuries

Pinamonti picked up a month long injury in January, which will probably affect next year's Calendar Year Scoring Challenge (he missed 10 games):

pinamonti-season11-13.jpg.f43828ef5c6911b71a0d2c9fbff1caf0.jpg

He also had a phantom injury (he had to miss a couple of games while he restored his condition):

Development

This is what Pinamonti looks like now (no change):

Goals - Highlights

Pinamonti had two 5 goal efforts and one 4 goal effort:

Goals - Club

He scored 82 goals in 50 games:

pinamonti-season11-30.jpg.c84950c9ccadd9c7c4a50f7419bea46b.jpg

That seems to be about the ratio he's settled into since I got the ITN job. Not bad, especially considering the injury.

Goals - ITN

Pinamonti had 127 international goals at the start of the year:

pinamonti-season10-28.jpg.584f3cb6b4e98aad589d39fbcfc314e2.jpg

And he finished with 146, meaning he'd scored 19 goals in 14 games.

pinamonti-season11-44.jpg.a431ccdee347517f2724b4f6fb92baa7.jpg

Once again, not quite as good as a few seasons ago, but still they all count.

Progress

29 years old (EOY) Season Total
Club Goals  82 765
ITN Goals  19 113
Totals 101 878

Whew! He's back to 100+ goals, despite a month off. We'll take that.

The Future

Pinamonti is now only 122 goals short of the 1K. He should get within sniffing difference next year.

He has just turned 29 and I'm hoping to get another 8 or 9 years out of him. Will it be enough to get to 1.5K? I think so, as long as we get another 3 seasons or so of 100+ goals. That'll give us 6 years or so to mop up the last 300 goals.

Anyway, we'll keep pushing and see where we get to. Thanks for reading!
