Three nation, Three different club, One goal. Three Golf Rookie challenging for the great Green Vest in the Augusta National Golf Club Challenge.

First Challenger:

We all know him for one special thing. Legend says he’s completed every single challenges ever exist on FMMVibe history except for this one. There’s no time for banters this time for him. Chosing Atletico Madrid as his club, I present 2019/20 Best Newcomer winner @RichD !

Second Challenger:

Our second challenger are famous for losing everything. Imagine forgetting to put lettuce in a sandwich! He loves Dutch but his son is from Scotland?! I got no idea how this is logical but hey that’s what the Wikipedia says. He chose Inter Milan as the club. Please welcome Micha- I mean Zach- I mean @broodje kip!

Third Challenger:

Our final challenger he’s Vibe’s best YouTuber. Everyone’s scared of facing his corner tactic. Imagine your defender slacking suddenly a big straight line of players ready to volley the ball top bin. Hole 1 - Tea Olive (Par 4)

So you've picked your team and are ready to start on this mammoth journey. What? Tea Olive? Yes, every hole at Augusta is named after the flower or tree that grows on that particular hole. Anyway, it's a flower native to Asia and is a fairly tricky hole to start off with. A birdie is very much achievable however it may be wise to just accept the par for the first hole, keep your score at 0 and move on. After all nobody likes dropping a shot straight from the off.

Challenge - Buy an Asian GK and ensure he concedes as few league goals as possible. He must play every league game in full but you can buy a backup in case he’s unavailable.

Birdie - 0-8 conceded

Par - 9-18 conceded

Hole 1 - Rich 

Firstly we all decided we wouldn’t sign Mathew Ryan as it would make this challenge too easy to start with, so we decided to go elsewhere.

Well who would have guess I would have been the first one to complete the first challenge eh? Not like me to storm through a season. This was going to be a very different kind of season for me as I’m always usually about goals so trying to keep as many from not going in my end will be fun, that sounded dirty.

So this is a screenshot of how the two goalkeepers look at the start of the game, I hadn’t screenshotted at the start of my game so had to start a new one to get what they looked like 🤣

Woo would be my first choice Keeper and would only not play if he was injured.

So Oblak had to go unfortunately, he’s so good on the game as well, so no surprise we sold him for so much. Gimenez was such a little moaner he had to go in January which wasn’t great for our central defence, but we brought in Demiral who’s an absolute beast on the game. Maxi Gomez, Bruno Fernandes and Gaya really strengthen our squad.

So to start with first few games I had two central midfielders with Fernandes pushed up, but it just wasn’t as good as I wanted defensively, so we changed to this. We shall see how it worked out soon. This was our league team as we used a different team for cups and champions league.

So we win the cup, played my best team for this as I really wanted to win. We won comfortably in the end against a Real Betis side who done brilliantly all season.

So not bad from our second team, we could have maybe won it if the red card didn’t happen in that second game, but who cares right as it’s about the league isn’t it?

Well a wonderful season, we had a great balance about us, I was hoping for a bit less conceded, but with Kieran Tripper at RB not a bad defensive record and gives us a decent score.

So he looks a decent keeper now and will defo be at the club next season, maybe even still as a no 1. He conceded 1 in 2 over the season and I don’t understand how the average ratings are so so low on keepers.

Seems a very solid way of setting up doesn’t it!  I was lucky as I didn’t need a work permit in Spain, which leaves you with a bit of a disadvantage.

Hole 2 - Pink Dogwood (Par 5)

This is your chance to make up some early ground and get ahead of the game before the more challenging holes start. It really is a case of risk versus reward, however, in seasons 2 and 3.

Challenge - Buy a striker from a club that wears pink (away kits and 3rd kits are allowed). In the first season, your striker must score as many as possible in all comps. The first season total enables what you can aim for in season 2 (example - 70 goals in season 1 means you will earn birdie if you beat it in season 2, but you couldn’t go for eagle). Failure to beat your season 1 target will result in a double bogey.

First, my Asian goalkeeper and his backup, a backup that refused to learn English, good thing that I didn't used him.

Transfers, well, this is where is interesting and the thing that kept me on this game so much time that I finished the challenge this late.

In August I have signed only the goalkeepers, Goretska (MC), Poulsen (FC), and Bornauw (DC) and that was it. I did try to bring Ugarte but he failed the work permit several times. He got it in the last day of the transfer window and the transfer was canceled. After two official games I've made an impulse buy and got Allan (DM) from Everton, BAD MOVE!! Somehow nobody in the squad loved him and all the relationships on the pitch were red and he got only ratings of 6 or below. I have sold him in January making a profit of 500k 🤣

Also in January I have sold or exchange Auba, Lacazette, Leno and few others in order to get my hands on Hernandez (DL) and Toliso (MC), these two were a fortune!!

 

Enough with transfers, moving on to competitions, as usual I don't care about cups so I have used backups in most of the games, in fact all except the first one and the last one.

First one was Community Shield: WON IT! (on penalties) 

 

Carabo Cup: got kicked out from the first match by United, on penalties. 

FA Cup: got kicked out by Championship side Boro, quarter final, on penalties.

Europa League, this was the last match, just 3 days after the last match in the league and 4 players were on international duty, how stupid. Anyway, WON IT! on penalties 

 

So on every cup competition I won it or got kicked out on penalties. 

 

 

The league, it didn't start too good, not losing but conceding 4 goals in the first 6 games. I've made some big changes, going super defensive and it worked!! We the got only two goals in 32 games, losing only one game and wining most of the games by 2 or 3 goals. Most of the games were played on counter and big games on contain. Also on big games the inside forwards were relegated one step down and acted as defensive wingers, the DM got also down and acted as a Non-Nonsens Center Back, so super defensive.

Now we must prepare for Hole 2. The first one was kind of my type, I know how to make a bunch of players work together as a team where everyone have the same shine. Hole two is @RichD type of challenge where you take a striker and make him score a crazy amount of goals, so glad that the first one it's a birdie as the next one might be a Bogey!

Not the player I was planning to use. Initially I wanted to use Griezmann but accidentally agreed the transfer for the end of the season 🤣. I tried to buy Mariano but he moved to Leverkusen while I was negotiating with Griezmann. Then tried to get Osimhen or Milik but both cost over £100m. Finally I tried to get his teammate, Tammy Abraham but the same issue with the Napoli boys. In the end I settled with Werner and I’m telling you guys it really worth it!

Another fairly kind hole early on, however looks can be deceiving. Tread carefully here or risk dropping shots, however it's one you should be fine on given you have the whole season to do it.

Challenge - Get as many players as possible to score 4 or more goals in a game as possible. All competitions.

Welcome to my attempt at the second hole where I will be signing a striker from a team that have a pink kit, then they have a season to set a total of goals in which they have to beat the following season, if I fail it’s a double bogey.

So he was actually my 4th choice as he was actually my 4th choice as he was so expensive, but Brewster, McBurnie and Mariano didn’t want to come, but will he end up being a good choice?

Not many first team players coming in this year to be honest, was happy with most players. He cost a cool 65m.

So a dominant season from the boys, we smashed it and it was very comfortable in the end. An enjoyable season.

Hole 2

Season 1 - The Benchmark

My pick for this Hole was Mariano, It was the cheapest from this challenge as @RichD and @broodje kip spent 60-65M, pound sterling and I did pay for Mariano only 24.5M in Euro.

I was looking for a Birdie on this hole, so 70+ goals, and in january, with less than half of the game consumed he had 35 goals, and he missed 2 games. Then, disaster struck and with two small injuries and few bad games I've seen myself in the position to go for Par! Damn you Mariano!

 

Competitions, we won 4. Liverpool took their revenge for the last year Community Shield and won it this year, on penalties, again! We won the EUFA Super Cup (against Real Madrid), Carabo Cup (against arch rivals Tottenham), lost in the semis of FA Cup (against Manchester City), won the league and Champions League (against Dortmund)... so a good year!

Season 2 - The challenge

I was real frustrated by how the benchmark season went with Mariano and I have decided to make 0 signings, and 0 selling, and only bought future prospects and some strikers for the next hole with the transfer making effect at the end of the season, so nothing to show.

At the begining of the season we had Clubs World Cup and Mariano decided to frustrate me more and show me that he can score a bucket of goals, first game:

 

After this I have decided that Mariano will leave the club at the end of the season. And one good offer came in from Tottenham... go, so long goodbye!

 

Competitions, went kind of the same, won everything except the demestic cups. On Carabo Cup we exited in the first round againt Tottenham and on FA Cup in the semis against Southampton.

Mariano, I've used him as a secondary striker in most of the games as I knew he will score the 52 goals needed, and he did. Still mad at him!!

So for this hole, the score is PAR. In the last 7-10 games in this season I've tested many tactics hoping that I will have the perfect one for the next hole: Get as many players as possible to score 4 or more goals in a game as possible. All competitions. No luck so far but I'm close, or closer.

Right from the start I must say that last year this challenge was a little different, so @Ian and @FuddledFox had the job to get the players to score only 3 goals. Why the change @samhardy?

If it would be hattricks, that would have been easy, just look at the amount of hattricks scored in the pursuit of the magic 4:

Harry Kane 1. Leon Goretzka 1, Maxi Gomez 4 and Youssuf Poulsen 6... yes SIX!! I almost broke my phone!!

Anyway, the season got me 5 (out of 6) trophies. The only one I didn't won was the FA Cup, lost against Liverpool in the semis, on penalties.

To play on this hole I had to make some weird transfers. I already had like 3 strikers from last season and got 6 more. 3 of them went on loan and 6 went on to play for the challenge. 6 because this was the tactic

Maybe is conuter intuitive to put 3 strikers up front when you need to get a player to score 4 goals in game but here me out, the midfielders stood down and did little to score, usually I keep my mids as one RP/AP, one BWM and one BBM and they score a lot. The wingers got into AP mode to just deliver crossed or passed and the tactic was to shoot on sight so the only players who would try to score were the strikers. With a TM in the middle most of the balls would go to him and if some balls were to go on the other ones they will first try to see if is a better position strikers. So at the end most of the shots were due to the TM.

Every time a player would score 4 goals he would go on the transfer market, an player exchange mostly. That's how Kane was exchanged for Gomez and Salah for Calvert-Lewin.

Also worth mentioning that my set pieces routine helped a lot, ALL of the 4 goals feats had at least one penalty or free kick from 16-18 meters in front of the goals... see it here

 

Now without further chit chat, the 4 goal scorers

1. Harry Kane, he needed just 2 games: one hattrick and one with 4 goals

 

2. Sandro wasn't a TM but in a twisty situation, the TM got a small injury so he was next in line. Also the extra time helped a lot!

 

3. Romelu Lukaku... can you guess how many games did he need? ONE! One game, 5 goals and then straight to loan to Chelsea as I couldn't find a player exchange good enough.

 

4. Mohamed Salah, 3rd game. The transfer window was over and he went on a player echange in late January for Calvert-Lewin. 

 

5. Youssouph Badji. I had to get him back from loan (from Liverpool) to put him on the go. This game was different as one TM was injuried and one was exhausted so I've set all 3 strikers as Poacher with Badji in the middle. Worked!

 

6. Dominic Calvert-Lewin. This was frustating to get. Everton didn't want to get Salah, 10% + 20M for him, they wanted 126M and then they sold it to Juventus for 63M. Juventus took Salah, 10% and 15M.

 

7. Maxi Gomez, after 4 hattricks finally got me 4 goals... 5 goals in a game. 

 

The only player that got hattricks and didn't get 4 goals was Poulsen but I'm not that mad, he was AF for most of the other players... in fact I'm a little disappointed as one good game with 4 goals from him would have got me a birdie, right now I only got a Par.
