😂 Nice way to stop someone from completing his goals

That's our @BatiGoal ... Actually, he's just given me more confidence, as it means he thinks I actually have a chance of pulling this off.

As for my players, well I've pinned his comments on the wall and they're pretty fired up. Not the first time I've used this hack journalist's comments to motivate my players... Probably not the last... 🤣

Good luck mate! I particularly love the idea of a back up striker 1kc, the times your back up will come on at 60-70mins and take advantage of a tiring defence by notching a couple, great idea!

Thanks mate. Yeah, it could be inspired genius, but more likely he'll end up with 500 goals or something. Still 2KC and 0.5K doesn't have quite the same ring to it, so may as well roll my sleeves up and give it a shot!

Update - Season 1

Well, this is a crazy career and it got off to a crazy first season.

I don't think I've ever had one like it. Not that the results were particularly crazy or anything like that, but I tore apart and rebuilt the squad not once, but twice!

The reason: The new pre-match report and accompanying player sentiment system.

Rebuild One - July

I basically did what I do at the start of most careers: I gutted the squad and brought in my own players.

It's hard to go wrong with this approach, especially in the SPL, the Championship, or with a lower level EPL team. There may be a couple of existing players who are decent prospects, but generally they are average to good for the level. I need players who can win us the Champions League and the existing lads are not going to get us there.

Given the top players won't sign, I hedge my bets on youngsters. There are some I know of already: Tonali, Palacious, Passlack, Moro, Eze etc; and I also spend a LOT of time scouting and trying to get players who aren't interested. The end result is a squad of youngsters that's bound for the Champions League Final in a couple of years time.

So that's what I did here and the squad was looking pretty nice. However...

Slackers

It turns out that half my squad can't be arsed playing in the SPL or the domestic cup competitions:

Finds it hard to get motivated for matches in the Ladbrokes Premiership...
Overly relaxed about the forthcoming match against Rangers...

Well why did you sign for the club then Sunshine? Not too bright are you?

I suspect that this is just surfacing some game mechanics that have always been in place, so I think I could probably just ignore this and push on and I'd get similar results to what I have in the past (in FMM19).

But... what if I could get better results if I had a squad where everyone was up for every game?

I couldn't ignore that thought.

Rebuild Two - January

As soon as the transfer window opened, I took the painstakingly assembled squad and ripped it apart (again).

Anyone who was getting those messages had to go. Well, except for Koita... Yes, my backup striker who is supposed to get to 1K is a slacker. Fingers crossed that his talent will carry him through when he's bored out there on the pitch.

The rest however had to go. We might be able to carry one slacker, but we can't carry a dozen.

Trying to replace them was hard - some of the outgoing slackers had a Relaxed personality, but others were Normal. Ntcham was even Determined:

crazy-season01-29.jpg.d897af09c4faf2bcd014915f67f37ffc.jpg

That made it hard to know whether the players coming in would be slackers as well. I tried to get players who were Professional or Driven, etc, but had to take a lot of risks. Sure enough, some were not motivated and went straight into the the queue to sell again.

But by and large the rebuild was successful: most of our squad are now motivated to succeed here. The new arrivals are 6 months behind where they'd normally be in terms of development (which cost us in the Champions League), but the future is looking bright.

Does It Really Make Any Difference?

Of course, there is part of me that wonders whether the results would be any different if I had just ignored the messages and pushed on with the slackers. Perhaps the messages are just dressing that don't really have much effect on the outcome.

Wait, can you hear that sound? Like someone laughing in the distance? I think that's @samhardy ...

Transfers

Well, I'm a wheeler and dealer alright, but I've never done anything like this before:

Spoiler

crazy-season01-50.jpg.2f19da080366a57985db351fbc583b46.jpg

As mentioned above, I cleared out the existing squad, replaced them with promising youngsters, then had to do it all over again. I don't think I've ever spent so long on a single season before.

Tactics

I'm still using the same tactics I used in FMM19 (yes, Defensive) and they are working in much the same way: Most chances for the striker, with many coming from the wing (good for the Vignato Assists 1KC):

crazy-season01-34.jpg.6659be51b362b4baf35b8a50dcb7b656.jpg

The central AP does seem to be getting a few more goals than last year, but maybe that's just down to the players and to the fact that our strikers are not yet at full power. It's something I'm watching however.

I'm not going to go into any more detail here, but I discussed what I do extensively in this thread from last year (read it all, so much gold from so many good managers):

Club Results

We won everything domestically, as you would expect (and we'll get even better each year):

crazy-season01-43.jpg.35288ff6a4c5df61aa9419c93dd1bd69.jpg

In the Champions League, we snuck through a strong group, beating Real Madrid to second courtesy of a 1-0 win over them (overriding their superior goal difference). However, we went out to Napoli in the first knockout round, with VAR denying a late goal that would have seen us through.

I think the new next match report / player sentiment system helps with the big games, as I can see which players think we'll lose, so I can swap them out for less intimidated players. Or then again, maybe it doesn't do much.

Wait, is that Sam laughing again?

Injuries

A great season, with no injuries for either Unuvar or Koita. However Vignato wasn't quite so lucky, with a 3 week injury (and a ghost injury):

Development

Unuvar at the end of the season:

crazy-season01-55.jpg.b4446b13b93e6b48bde127ff36f2640f.jpg

Very nice! He got tired a lot and also occasionally felt the pressure of first team football, but he's shaping up as a good looking player. He reached the "needs to mature if he is to develop further" mark near the end of the season. I can only hope that unlocks next season, as I really want him to work on his Physicals.

Koita at the end of the season:

crazy-season01-57.jpg.35f3a9557aeda29625f63629ddaadd69.jpg

He hasn't been able to get to 20 Aerial like Unuvar, but the rest is looking pretty good. No development plateau for him, so hopefully more improvement to come. He does get tired easily though.

Vignato at the end of the season:

crazy-season01-59.jpg.8210ac9e29f3b37725667c54faf77f07.jpg

He's looking very impressive and also has more to come. This is definitely going the right way. He does cut inside and score the odd goal which is unfortunate, but can't do much about that now (maybe play Disciplined instead of Expressive?). Like the others, he does get tired easily.

Unuvar 2KC

A sign of things to come?

crazy-season01-36.jpg.ae80be1041a002bb7f2f38bec6f82b3a.jpg

Unuvar scored 44 goals from 43 games:

crazy-season01-56.jpg.4b79aedb907f352eb7c7531a2ff8d061.jpg

A nice start for a 16 year old, can't really expect any more than that.

Koita 1KC

Koita scored 24 goals from 48 games:

crazy-season01-58.jpg.efc1083e93907132ab542a1ac2ee7177.jpg

I'd normally say that's pretty good for someone primarily coming off the bench, but he's turned 20 and needs to pick up the pace pretty quick if he wants to keep @BatiGoal off his back...

Vignato Assists 1KC

Vignato provided 29 assists from 44 games:

crazy-season01-60.jpg.55b5adb56d29ae6531a07aed8782553c.jpg

A decent start, but once again needs to pick up the pace pretty quickly. Arzani only had 34 in his first season, so not worried yet.

Progress

Season Goals (Unuvar) Goals (Koita) Assists (Vignato)
01 44 24 29
Total 44 /2000 24/1000 29/1000

The Future

I'd like to have gotten higher numbers, but I think they will come (and soon).

We have a decent squad in place now, but they need to develop. Once they power up a bit, we'll be a pretty good team and the goals will start flowing.

No need, he's hopeless. I'm not wasting my time with slackers. Not even a number crunching manager like you can get him back on track. Give up already 👍

Nice start but thats one hell of a rebuild job you pulled off. Losing confidence so fast in your players?? 😂

LOL... All to do with the new messages (that my players can't get motivated by the SPL).

The thing is if I just ignored the new messages, it would probably have ended up just as good. I probably had the same problem in 19, just couldn't see it existed, and I kicked ass there.

So, I'm not convinced those message make much difference - but hey, if my players can't get motivated for the SPL, then they are OUT. Goodbye and don't come back! There's more where you came from... 😄

Strong start for a 16 year old. Did you train him as a target man to get his aerial to 20?

Thanks. Yes, trained him as Target Man and on Aerial most of the time. Interestingly though, once he got to 15, his next upgrade didn't change Aerial at all. So I switched to Stamina (which he sorely needed as well) and in the next upgrade he jumped right to 20 Aerial!! Wasn't complaining...

Not a bad start to season 2:

My Defensive tactic looks like it's just as effective as in FMM19 now that the players are getting a little better. They still have some way to go mind you...

Update - Season 2

We had a slowish start in season 1, but the team will be better this year and we're looking to ramp things up.

Pre-match Report / Player Sentiment System

It's taking me a long time to play a season because I only include players in the match day squad if they are up for the game.

Tired? Jaded? Feeling the pressure of first team football? Take a break son. Intimidated by the opposition? Can't get motivated? Don't even waste my time.

Others will say that this is just window dressing and doesn't really affect the game. I get where they are coming from and will probably pay this less attention when I have a truly world class team, but... I do think it makes some difference, even if it's minimal. At our current level, that can be the difference between going deep in the CL and being knocked out early on.

Read on to see how we did, but it was better than expected for this point of the save (admittedly I have gone that far in the past, but maybe once in 8 attempts). We had a lot of tight wins and I do think it helped that all the players were up for it.

Transfers

Less transfers this season:

crazy-season02-33.jpg.853c001bc9dd4722d610f681b3d92a6b.jpg

Going out were some of the reserves that had been on loan. Decent players, but not really CL quality. If someone is willing to pay £20M for them, why not sell them? We also sold a few players that had fallen to the fringes (Pellegrini, Raya) and some who couldn't get motivated (Stankovic).

Coming in were Lewis Cook who looks great in this save, plus a bunch of promising youngsters.

Regens

I'm pretty sure that Emil Jones is Zlatan 2.0. It's hard to find regens in this version, but there are not many Swedish strikers in their first season with the correct foot combination. As a bonus, Jones can be trained as a winger - if I can apply his awesome potential to that position, we'll have a great backup for Vignato!

Even if he's not Zlatan's regen, he's likely to be good, as are the other youngsters I'm signing. I only have Scotland loaded and only the top couple of leagues at that, so there aren't many players in the save. I may miss out on a few gems as a result, but that means most of the foreign players in the save are pretty good (the mediocre ones are mostly left out).

Tactics

Nothing really to add here. As the players are getting better, the tactic is indeed performing almost identically to FMM19, which makes this save much more likely to be successful.

Club Results

We won everything domestically again and from here on in, I'll probably stop getting screenshots (maybe just the manager history).

In the Champions League, we romped the group, showing how much improved we are over last year. Something's not right at PSG by the way. After that, we had some tight games, but managed to progress all the way to the final, where we faced Inter. They got the first goal, but we dominated possession and shots, and eventually won 2-1. As I said above, it's unusual for me to win it so soon in a save (with Celtic), but I think the new next match report / player sentiment system helped get us through.

ITN Job

Mali is not playable in this save as I didn't choose the right combination of starting leagues. That leaves Holland as the only ITN job that will help me. I've never managed them before and I'm sort of looking forward to it. Then this happened:

Of course I immediately applied. And...

crazy-season02-09.jpg.335f1ab16afcfb3fb9fdd9bb5f67c7ea.jpg

Too soon. I guess I'll have to wait a few years.

Injuries

Koita didn't have much luck this year, with 4 injuries. Well actually, one was during preseason and one happened right after the CL final and was only for a couple of days. Another was a month long injury and did wipe him out of most of the Club World Championship, but he has the offseason to get over it. So I guess he was pretty lucky after all! Though it's a worrying trend...

Development

Unuvar spent most of the season on "needs to mature if he is to develop further", but is good enough to score in this league and seems to have significant development waiting once he matures a bit.

crazy-season02-40.jpg.18612357d40f5371f572b7fdb061570d.jpg

Koita still hasn't gotten to 20 Aerial, but he's looking great and there is more to come (although it is a little slower now):

crazy-season02-42.jpg.a37f29289e41d75e57edfc324244f788.jpg

Vignato is looking really good - his development has slowed more than the others, but he probably doesn't need much more:

crazy-season02-44.jpg.a910151e1824d4964b0051072222e25b.jpg

One very interesting and very welcome occurrence was this - Koita considering me as his mentor:

crazy-season02-13.jpg.d2e658c5f186eaa82eb841951e1de32f.jpg

I later noticed that his personality had changed from Relaxed to Normal, which I assume is related to this. Before this, he had trouble getting motivated for SPL games, but is now much improved.

Unuvar 2KC

Unuvar scored 65 goals from 51 games:

crazy-season02-53.jpg.96ce356e79bfe11d1d4a83162ccbfc50.jpg

He was actually scoring more quickly than that early in the season, but he faded slightly (and I prioritised Koita in a few games where I didn't have to).

Koita 1KC

Koita scored 56 goals from 61 games:

crazy-season02-55.jpg.c44987033071b5111854484c5c5b5e5a.jpg

As mentioned above, I prioritised him a little over Unuvar later in the season, which improved his ratio somewhat.

Vignato Assists 1KC

Vignato provided 76 assists from 55 games:

crazy-season02-54.jpg.ba381867d583738bebb1f42ef5bcd35e.jpg

This is more like it. I think he will be able to hit this sort of number regularly from here on in.

Progress

Season Goals (Unuvar) Goals (Koita) Assists (Vignato)
01 44 24 29
02 65 56 76
Total 109 /2000 80/1000 105/1000

Vignato is clearly on track to reach his target, but there are question marks over the strikers. A combined 121 goals is not enough - it needs to be at least 150 and ideally even higher than that. They are still young though, so there is hope yet.

The Future

This was a decent season, but we need to improve further next year. The squad is still improving, as are the main players, so there's still a chance we can pull this off. Gonna be tight though!

Thanks mate - yeah, I'm pretty happy with the assists. He's ahead of where I had Arzani in FMM19 and he went on to reach 96 one season, so I think Vignato will probably match that. And getting Unuvar to 2K is doable in this version. I'm just not sure about getting Koita to 1K at the same time. But oh well, don't want it to be too easy hey?

Crazy numbers from Vignato, and decent numbers as well for Koita as a sub. Still a long way to go, KIU.

Thanks! Vignato is working out great, although it's really just the tactic I use. I was getting great numbers in 19 with Arzani in the right winger role and the tactic is working exactly the same this year. Before last year though, I don't think I'd ever made it to 50 assists before.

Koita wasn't always a sub - Unuvar missed quite a few games with injury or needing resting etc. Then there were other periods where I flipped them around and started Koita just because I felt a) he could get more goals and b) he needed more goals..

Thanks mate Yeah Vignato is looking great - I really want to make it to 1K because I left a 31 year Arzani high and dry on 866 assists. I'm sure he would have made it, but I don't think I can go back to 19 to finish it off. So I need to live out the dream through Vignato...

76 assists in a season is amazing mate 😮

Thanks! But this is what I was doing in FMM19:

oz-season10-49.jpg

In FMM19/20 you just need an Aerial 20 striker and someone who can cross to them and the assists will flow. 😄

I guess my tactic has something to do with it too. The players naturally go down the flanks (I don't have that setting turned on, as it doesn't work for me). I make sure my main winger is stronger than the other winger and the CM on that side is stronger than the other one and most attacks happen down my chosen flank. Add in a lot of corner goals, and this is what you get...

Thanks mate! Although in my defence, they are calculated insane, not just straight up insane. 🤪

I'm in the sweet spot, where everything lines up (tactic, Aerial super power, week league etc). I would have got the 2KC and the 1KC assists in 19 if I'd finished my career there and lucky for me, it seems there is no real change in the match engine (at least for my tactic). So the only insane bit is the extra 1KC. And yeah that is insane, but you can't keep your main striker on the pitch all the time, so may as well give it a go!
