Update 10/48 -

 

Side Challenge 2

It was only a matter of time before we hit 1000 team goals and now in our 5th season the time has come. We started the second half of the season on a 3.44 gls average and at the time we smashed our 1000th goal into the net we reached 3.47 p/m. That's one side challenge in the bag.

The Managers 1000 goals Challenge Completed 

 

Side Challenge 1

We hit 7 scorelines out of 9 in the first half of the season, including the highest 3. So we started the second half of the season full of confidence needing to hit the two remaining scorelines 1-0 and 6-0. We are determined to bring this one home as well after multiple failed attempts. But it took us nearly 20 games before hitting one of the two, which kinda got me a little worried tbh. Hitting all 9 isn't hard per se, but in one season is.

It's the end of March and we finally managed the supposedly easy and common 1-0 win. But we did get it in the end and what rests us now is the 6-0 scoreline. With only April and May left this could potentially be a tight affair. We're as close as we've ever been, and I really don't want to fail again and retry again for dunno how many times. Then 4 games later mid April we finally seal the (or)deal.

Yes!! Delighted. This side challenge has been a pain to complete. I definitely regretted having started this at times but it's one of those challenges I just had to have my name on. Can't wait to see the leaderboard with just BatiGoal on it 😎

Thanks @Kanegan glad that one in particular is over. With no side challenges left and still a long way to go in the main challenge, I'll have a quick look around to see if I can add one or two along the way.

Great stuff with the Gundogan challenge - I wasn't sure you'd be able to reel things back in and only score a single goal in a game. That must have been tough! As for the club 1K, super stuff, much much higher gpg than I have currently (but not surprised about that).

Thanks @Scratch it's not your regular 1KC formation which explains the high gpg. If I play a single amateur up front he's never scoring 20+ gls / ½ season. I tried and there's no way, so there's 3 guys banging 'em in 😉

Thanks guys. Still I gotta say there's a tremendous amount of luck needed to get all nine. Stats to put things in a clearer perspective: 

61 games and only 30 clean sheets. 

  1. 1-0 (x1)
  2. 2-0 (x4)
  3. 3-0 (x9)
  4. 4-0 (x7)
  5. 5-0 (x3)
  6. 6-0 (x1)
  7. 7-0 (x2)
  8. 8-0 (x1)
  9. 9-0 (x2)

The 1, 6, 8-0 were tough to get. You may think the 1-0 is easy, but think about it, when you're trying to create formations to score loads you rarely get games decided by a single goal.

My advice, don't bother. 😜

Amateur Player 10: "Nostradamus" Neto

"Fingers" did exceptionally well getting us 30gls so we did a quick lookaround to see if there's still any decent players left that can deliver a similar feat. We searched, we found. Time to present our next Amateur Player -> This time we stayed in Portugal, Alcochetense the club - promoted from highest amateur tier to lowest (playable) pro league - #10 "Nostradamus" Neto.

BG: You predict? 

Neto: I predict. 

BG: Do they ever come true? 

Neto: I never miss. 

BG: Can you say the same about converting chances? 

Neto: The contrary.

BG: ..... how surprising. 

Neto: Thanks for believing in me tho. 

BG: I don't. 

Neto: .....

BG: What are the chances of your next prediction coming true? 

Neto: 100%.

BG: Cool. Speak. 

Neto: I'm going to do shit at Porto, waste a shitload amount of magnificent chances and give you a shit ugly goal tally by the end of it. 

BG: I've heard worse. Let's get to work.

Identical. A first. All my previous 9 amateurs improved over a half season period in some way, shape or form. This dude zip. Simply refused to. Well, he's 30 afterall so any attribute that hasn't declined is a plus. Picked him up right at the "hills of skills chills". I like him for his shooting, decisions and movement. Technique, pace and stamina made him stand out from others a little more. Looks solid tbf. Let's hope "Nostradamus" has been given the wrong nickname at birth.

First brace in an epic 0-9 win to greatly enhance our chances of completing the Gündogan gig, which we eventually did. His fellow strikers stole the show on the day.

Another good game from the lads. A bad day for Chelsea and a good one for Porto. "Nostradamus" is doing quite well so far. Is this the beginning of the end of his perfect prediction rate?

If only our guy had "Fingers" ability to nick in that third chance for a dirty hattrick. Still did a decent job for us on a higher level he's accustomed to. Can't say I'm surprised though.

My primary aim is to score the absolute minimum of 20 gls in order to end this career within a reasonable time frame. Secondary aim is to achieve 1 g/m. Both ticked off so things are ticking along nicely. Maybe after his short but successful spell with us "Nostradamus" will consider swapping his nickname for another.

Update 11 -

 

Amateur Player 11: João Nuno "The Nutmeg"

"Nostradamus" ended our 5th season with 27 gls totaling a tally of 262 of the required 1000. Good but not great, so time to ship him away to anywhere but here and find ourselves the next lad with amateuristic talents. Decent players to be found in this area so in Portugal we stayed. Our next Amateur Player -> Eléctrico FC the club - #11 João Nuno "The Nutmeg" the player.

Nuno: Call me "The Nutmeg".

BG: Yeah, about that, care to explain?

Nuno: What do you mean?

BG: You the "nutmegger" or "nutmeggee"?

Nuno: Does it matter?

BG: It does. Are you the person who does nutmegs or gets nutmegged?

Nuno: The latter I suppose.

BG: You suppose? 

Nuno: It's the fucking latter, ok! 

BG: "The Nutmeggee" then.

Nuno: That makes me look like I'm a joke. 

BG: You are until proven otherwise. 

Nuno: Alright alright, where the training grounds at?

BG: You're standing on it, you "Nutmeggee"!... FFS!

Nuno: ah, got it, haven't seen one in years.

BG: -sigh- amateurs!

For an amateur lad in just 6 months, the improvements seem about right. Technique and Movement +1, Decisions +2. At least there's ups in the important attributes, which couldn't be said about our previous "Nostradamus" friend.

"The Nutmeg" started so poorly that I decided to simply screenshot his goal page to analyze his scoring progression, or lack thereof. 1 goal in 5?? Jesus me, I really picked the gem this time, didn't I!

Never had I seen such abysmal numbers in the early stages of my challenge, so I was worried I'd picked a real bad apple this time. 5 of 10 is nicer to look at tho. There's hope.

8 from 15 is still very ugly considering I'm aiming for 1 goal per game. Or at least in that proximity, but we're way off at this point. I need more goals. Fast. Come on, ladz.

Finally a very solid month for "The Nutmeg" and 20 games 15 goals is starting to be worth the time and money I'm putting into this. The minimum of 20gls I've set for myself is within reach now.

A good month followed by a bad one. A miserable 2 gls brings us to a measly 17gls/25games. Definitely competing for Worst Amateur thus far, which is still in hands of the first player this career saw, "The Sleeper".

We end this with a decent final run of +6 gls from the remaining 5 games allocated to João Nuno. The final tally is well under 1 g/m. With a score of 23 for ½ season, it isn't our worst run but certainly not our best. I had a hard time getting him to convert his chances as he just loved missing them. Needless to say I'm very happy "The Nutmeg's" run has come to an end, and we're off to look for the next amateur. Not that we can  allow ourselves to be selective in this amateur market, but I need to pick smarter this time. Still a very long way to go, especially if we continue to score low numbers.

Update 12 -

 

Amateur Player 12: "Pea roller" Papalélé

With 27 goals in half a season our "Nutmeggee" did a fairly good job for us. Already 285 in the bag and 715 out of it. The road is still very long but as long as we keep the stones rolling we'll be OK. The next lad also comes from a Portuguese club, the skill level of these amateur players seems better than their Scottish, Welsh or Danish counter parts. So expect to see the growing list to be dominated by Portuguese amateurs. Next Amateur Player -> from club: AD Camacha - player #12: "Pea roller" Papalélé.

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what his nickname meant. From experience having led 11 amateurs in this career already, I knew I was in for another classy disaster that every team wants to see depart rather than arrive. So I googled - a feeble shot attempt that doesn’t present any threat to the defensive team - fuck that, even preparing for the worst no longer calms a man's nerves.

 

- BG: So you produced this "pea roller" many moons ago, yes? 

- Papalélé: Every game, baby! 

- BG: Oh yeah, you accidentally pop a "pea roller", no worries, mate. 

- Papalélé: No no, I do nothing but, they're my finest attempts at goal. I somtimes fire shots at half that speed, but those are perfectly timed AND placed. Only thing is they very rarely cross the goal line, even without the GK's intervention. To my defense, he never ever sees 'em coming but they just roll an eternity. Technically one of the most difficult shots, boss, the skill level, the angle, the.. Boss? 

- BG: Why stop there? Continue talking, please, continue while I find a nearby cliff.

What ½ season can do to a player. Obviously his value made a huge jump after his goals for us. And so did his essential skills. Shooting, Technique and Movement are all green. For amateurs that ain't green, that's gold! Decisions and Creativity also saw an improvement. In all, very happy with "Pea roller's" progress.

A nice start with a brace for our pea-rolling striker. A couple more of these and you'll hear no complaints from this manager.

Scoring once per game was one of our lad's thing, which is of course to be applauded, but it took another few months before he hit his second brace. Even 33yo Mané still got game.

Then a big win in the CWC against a Japanese powerhouse. We're slightly behind on the 1 gl per game schedule so these easier CWC games come in very handy.

And then the unthinkable kicks us in the balls. Our amateur boy is called up for ITN. WTF??? Even amateurs aren't safe from being dragged away from their clubs. Ffs it's my luck picking a Cape Verdean in the exact season the CWC games are played. Well, you could argue that's an amateur move on my part 🙄

These stints are already short as is so missing 3 very valuable games for extra "Pea roller" goals sucks. We have to settle for 29 matches -> 27 goals. Chances are we'd have gotten that ratio we wanted if not for his sudden unavailability, but we'll take this number. 27 is still a nice turnout for our lad. At least it's +4 over the previous "Nutmeggee" joke of a player. Let's hope the next hobo's got 30gls in him, been a few updates since I hit that number.

I have had the opposite on my Euro Tour save and Round the World last year where players come in for next to nothing, there value grows quickly at the bigger club but then I struggle to get close to the value they are at and have to take a profit but a much smaller one than there actual value.

Pretty balanced in terms of sales. About half of them either stayed and or were eventually sold for less than half their value. But the other lads brought in good money.
