Off Topic CM01/02 Career - European Zeros to Hero’s - Club 3

As well as playing FMM23 I also enjoy playing the classic that is Championship Manager 01/02. It’s free (and legal) to download and really simple to set up these days if you use this tool.

https://champman0102.net/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=2450

There are also lots of databases that can be downloaded so you can play different seasons through the years.

I’ve been playing a challenge and posting about it on a Facebook group but I wanted to keep all the posts in one place and I thought a few Golden Oldies on here like myself might enjoy reading about it as well.

Introducing…

European Zeros to Hero’s - Club 1

Since the European Cup started in the 1950s twenty different clubs have played in the final but never lifted the trophy. My aim is to get all 20 of those clubs to become European champions.

This is the full list of clubs that have failed at the final hurdle.

I will be playing each club on separate saves and using different DB’s from different seasons through the years.

This is a challenge I could have done on FMM23 but for a couple of reasons.

  • I couldn’t have completed Malmo or Partizan as the Swedish and Serbian leagues aren’t on FMM23.
  • The fact I can download new databases from different seasons of football means I can keep the challenge fresh.
  • The different DB’s available means I can go back to years with some classic players at these clubs. EG. @BatiGoal playing at Fiorentina or Zlatan at Malmö.

The first club I attempted was Arsenal on the original database.

In the first season we won the league on goal difference thanks to a 90th minute winner against Leeds in the last game of the season.

The Champions League was a different format back in 2001/02 and had two group stages for some strange reason.

I made it through the first group stage but failed to get out of a second group stage in a group that contained Real Madrid and Bayern.

In the second season the CL was my main priority and we were successful beating the mighty Roma in the final!!!

I say mighty as on the OBD Roma are just about the best team in the game for the first couple of seasons.

That was the first club ticked off my list but still another 19 to go and a few that will be tricky. I will include more screenshots in future updates but I played Arsenal a while back now and didn’t keep as much as I should have.

Next club: Man City using 2009 database

Thanks for reading.

Very cool idea, Fox. And as a master bottler like myself I'd probably bottle this like no other. I'll leave this to the pro's.

You got this!

Over selling yourself again I see as you are a decent bottler but I wouldn’t say a master.

Awesome, had many hours playing this game. Mint you can do different years. Like the idea you can play on your phone

Same mate and I’m racking up even more hours again. It’s still surprisingly playable after all these years and the different DB help with that. Few things get annoying like not being able to auto select a team and no way to save team selections though which make you appreciate those features in the more modern versions.

Absolutely love this. I was looking at an article about old CM/FM legends last night and reminiscing about this game. Great to see you playing it.

Amazingly I have never signed him or the (completely made up) legend To Madeira on the game either 20 odd years ago or since I got back playing it a year or so back!

Happy I found this @FuddledFox

I was just looking into CM01/02 this morning funnily enough and a couple years ago somehow managed to get it working on my phone ( can't remember how tho!)

Are you using CM on phone, tablet or PC?

Maybe have to get myself back onto the CM train sometime soon

European Zeroes to Heroes - Club 2 - Man City Staring 2009

Having taken Arsenal to Champions League glory in two season my next stop was Man City.

I used the 2009 database meaning I took over at Man City when they had the Arab money but they had yet to build an amazing side.

I did inherit a few star players though with Tevez, Robinho, Nigel De Jong and Kolo Toure at the club.

Season 1 - 2009/10

Transfers In

Christian Zapata - CB - £12m
Miguel Torres - DR - £10m
Marco Donadel - DMC - £8m
Jose Maria Movilla - DMC - £1.5m
Sol Campbell - CB - Free

Spoiler

Total Spent - £31.5m

Transfers Out

Shaun Wright Phillips - £5.5m
Felipe Caicedo - £5.75m
Valeri Bojinov - £4.7m
Javier Garrido - £3m
Martin Petrov - £1m

Total - £20m

We didn’t start in Europe so I was able to focus on the league and cup competitions. We did lead the league for awhile but then jibbed it and ended up in 3rd behind a rampant Chelsea and Man Utd.

That was enough to get us into the CL in season 2 though.

PL - 3rd
FA Cup - Semi Finals
League Cup - Semi Finals

Season 2 - 2010/11

The big transfer was I tempted Cristiano Ronaldo not to sign for Inter and instead come to us.

Transfers In

Ronaldo - AM/FLRC - £35m
Jozy Altidore - ST - £11.75m
Phillipe Mexes - £19m
Antonio Lopez - DL - £10.25m
Patrick Viera - DMC - £775k

Transfers Out

Adebayor - £13m
Stephen Ireland - £6.25m
Jo - £6.25m

Unbelievably Jozy Altidore was the difference maker this season as he joined in October with us struggling a bit to score goals despite having Tevez, Robinho and Ronaldo in the side. Jozy would go on and score 32 goals in 39 games for us in the season. Ronaldo had 24 goals from AMC and Roque Santa Cruz managed 20 goals as well.

This still wasn’t enough to win the league though as Chelsea were even more dominant this season finishing with 93pts to our 91pts. We did manage to win the League Cup though.

PL - 2nd
FA Cup - Quarter Finals
League Cup - Winners

The CL was the main priority though and we qualified by beating Fenerbahce comfortably over two legs. We then had a group of Barcelona, Benfica and AEK which we topped. We lost one game to Barca away and won the other 5.

The second group saw us play Ajax, Valencia and Roma and again we won the group this time losing away at Ajax and drawing with Valencia away but winning the other 4 games.

In the quarters we smashed Marseille 5-1 on aggregate and then played Juve in the semis. We were helped in the 1st leg by two reds cards for Juve and got a 1 nil win and then followed up at home with a 2 niler to make the final.

We played Arsenal in the final who finished 5th in the league and the gulf in class showed as we got a dominant 2-0 win thanks to Ronaldo and Miguel Torres goals.

That’s means we have completed Man City and a bit quicker than expected and effectively at the first attempt as we weren’t in the CL in season 1.

I can move on to the next club which will likely be Fiorentina.

Thanks for reading.

Those names, those legends, lovely stuff. Bringing CR7 to Man City tho, .. you should get a ban for that. 😡

I’m playing on laptop but it’s very possible to play on android devices. I use this software which is really simple to use and can get the game onto android as well but you need a PC to do it.

European Zeroes to Heroes - Club 3 - Fiorentina Starting 1998

Whatever happened to Batistuta? The Argentine goal machine who begged for his ankles to be amputated | Goal.com UK

Fiorentina were runners up to Real Madrid in the 1957 European Cup final but we aren't going that far back. Instead we are going tom 1998 when Fiorentina were one of Europe's top teams without ever winning the top competition.

This success was built on powerhouse forward Gabriel Batistuta aka Batigol and i will be building my team around him as well.

1349610783_Screenshot(263).thumb.png.80a5e615d729e51b2c2b8625fc93d0c5.png

It isn't all about Batigol though as we also have World Cup winner Edmundo and Portuguese playmaker Rui Costa to form a formidable attack.

Season 1

Unfortunately I didn't get all the screenshots i needed for this season.

Plenty of the success of Fiorentina was also due to them spending a lot of money. It would ultimately lead to there downfall as well as they would be in Serie C by the early 2000s due to going bankrupt. That is no concern of mine though and I was more than willing to spend the cash.

My aim was to try and improve the quality and depth of the squad all over the pitch and I succeeded to some extent.

Despite the signings we fell away badly in the league as at half way we were top but as the games mounted up we just couldn't keep up after Christmas. We ended up finishing 4th with Inter as champions, Juve came 2nd and AC Milan overtook us on the last day to come 3rd. Our 4th place finish is enough to get us back in the Champions League for next season though.

In the Champions League we performed much better as we made the final having beaten Real Madrid in the semis and got out of a group containing Man Utd, Barcelona and Ajax. We took on Bayern in the final with the hope being to win in season 1 but we lost 2-1 and so another season is needed.

2047463837_Screenshot(279).png.f9d2c9cf289011125acfd3f4c85d6e26.png

Season 2

Again we had money to spend and this time I was after the quality of player that could let us challenge for the Champions League abnd perhaps make a better fist of the league as well. Our star signing was Marcelo Gallardo from River who I admit I have never heard of so he perhaps didn't live up to the hype in real life.

These signings put us in a position that I have two top players in almost every position so I was expecting big things this season.

We performed better in the league this season but again Inter were relentless thanks to a rock solid defence. We didn't start the season that well and so were always playing catch up and with the way Inter played we were never catching them.

43600543_Screenshot(280).thumb.png.301b36dbf845d2a8cea56b1e58c0f054.png

The Champions League is always the main aim though and that went much better.

We struggled in the 1st group stage and were so close to falling at the first hurdle this season.

1072491099_Screenshot(281).png.37f5dba455b11130cb4f768dcf4a684f.png

As the season went on though we got better and better so with what looked like a tough 2nd group we never looked in danger of not making the knockouts. The only points we dropped were in a draw with Bayern in our last game when I rested players.

1523379594_Screenshot(282).png.ed3268cb16077006624d24c3db4f28e2.png

A quarter final with Real Madrid was always going to be tough and we were so so close to going out. All the goals came in a 5 minute spell of extra time after 180 minutes of stalemate.

264705646_Screenshot(283).png.62f440b00b19d33703abcb536e1ec633.png

The semi was an all Italian affair as we played Juventus and we won the first leg 2-0 meaning it should have been comfortable in the 2nd if we did nothing stupid. After 37 minutes of the 2nd leg though Juve were level and suddenlly it was game on. We have massive quality up front though and I always fancy us to score and that was the case as we got 2 in the 2nd half to win 4-2.

 1485963339_Screenshot(284).png.1f08b2bb78e5bc94f16bc0b69ed36271.png

That meant we had a 2nd Champions League final in just two seasons and we would play our nemesis Inter Milan. Our head to head record with Inter over the two seasons so far is actually very good and we haven't lost to them yet.

1551286628_Screenshot(286).png.6318640f13c612a0451a6591e2d4f7e8.png

Spoiler

We went behind early as Bobby Baggio scored against his old club but Batigol got his 49th goal of the season to equalise quickly. Then our biggest signing Gallardo gave us the lead before Edmundo gave us a comfortable lead at half time. IN the second half i began to gradually "shut up shop" as the time went on and it worked as there was no more goals.

1446710606_Screenshot(285).png.55f8bae77eb9b0fc8fedd83720e4fd79.png

That means just as Arsenal we complete Fiorentina after two attempts at the Champions League. Man City took two seasons but we won the CL at the first attempt. Unlike Arsenal or Man City though we didn't win any other trophies during our time at Fiorentina and never actually got close to as the furthest we got in the Italian cup was the semis and we were well behind Inter in the league.

Next Club - We head to Germany next and either Bayer Leverkusen or Borussia Monchengladbach.

Fantastic seeing Batigol ripping defenders to shreds again. Wasn't the easiest of season(s) but you got there in the end 👍
